I usually stay out of the Pit but those who are defending this young woman’s statements as well as her family really piss me off.

1. As a wife of a soldier, I understand the military and the camaraderie that exists between soldiers. This man’s act is a violation of trust on so many levels. He wasn’t just some stranger opening fire at McDonalds. He was a fellow soldier.

2. This young woman VOLUNTEERED to serve our country. VOLUNTEERED with the full understanding that she is being trained to defend our country. VOLUNTEERED knowing that the chance of being deployed is extremely high. Did I mention she VOLUNTEERED?

3. For one second, try to put yourself in the shoes of those families whose son/daughter/brother/father/mother was killed that day. Is that too hard? Let me try to help. Think of the person who you love the most. Now think of that person dead after one tragic day at Ft. Hood. Dead. Gone. Now imagine hearing some fucknugget THANKING the killer for just wounding his daughter.

This goes way beyond being grateful that your daughter is still alive. This spits in the face of all of those people who lost the people that they loved the most.

I wouldn’t suprise me that many soldiers have doubts about being deployed and experience some measure of relief if, for some reason, their deployment is postponed or cancelled. The only difference here is that this particular woman expressed that relief in a public way.

Bullshit. As others have pointed out, she did not say something to the effect of “it was a terrible thing that happened, but the one good thing that happened as a result was that I got to spend more time with my family at home.” Instead we got something to the effect of “I’m a special snowflake that God loves more than anyone else and God directed Hassan to go on a murderous rampage just so I could get out of my duty.”

 Eh...that's no different than all the people who thank God for saving them or their loved ones from earthquakes and plane crashes. 

People thank God for saving their loved ones in natural or mechanical disasters precisely because of how dangerous and/or deadly they were to some many others. SPC Roscoe (with the support her father) is grateful that the shooting happened because it meant she can now be discharged from the Army without having to deploy. Not that it was dangerous and deadly to so many others, not that it was a tragedy that deeply affected other families who are now missing loved ones - instead, it was a divinely orchestrated event that was apparently intended for her sole benefit.

I think the disconnect between these two examples is that none of us volunteers for Mother Nature’s foibles. Its relatively unforeseen. At age 18, we Americans cant drink a beer, but we can kill and vote for our country with voluntary service.

There is a difference there. Logical? Maybe not. But its there.

I remember after the Rodney King riots when that truck driver who got jacked and beaten said he was a Christian, and that he had forgiven his attackers. People were similarly outraged about that. “How dare he forgive those animals?” I don’t get that mentality at all. Show some fucking respect for the victims.

I suppose when they make it the business of the public by going on TV. Everybody wants to get on the idiot box, make a minute of fame out of their experience. I think the truck driver (Reginald Denny?) and this soldier should make their peace and forgive outside of the limelight.

As for the young lady and her family, their tragedy is not as large as the other victims, but if this is their way of dealing with it, then that is what it is. I wish them and the other victims and their families well. Just because they don’t express themselves artfully doesn’t mean they shouldn’t speak. And anyone who doesn’t want to get shipped to Iraq is fine with me, even if they desert. It’s a shitty war fought for oil company profits.

No, we only KNOW about her feelings because she said something publicly. And no, it’s not just my “fucking problem” if she believes this entire incident happened merely to allow her to avoid being deployed. There are other victims of this out there who will likely be hurt and appalled by her extreme self-absorption and narcissism. Get your head out of your ass.

Again, victims of shooting massacres usually aren’t known to make completely offensive, baffling public statements like this. It’s just as despicable as a survivor of Columbine publicly thanking Klebold and Harris for shooting up their high school because they managed to get into a really great college because of it. Only its even less justifiable in this case because SPC Roscoe is a Soldier who volunteered for the duty that she was being assigned.

A young woman doesn’t have to be dragged away from her husband to a war of foreign adventurism? Sounds like she has a serious silver lining there, & she has a right to be grateful for that.

There are greater crimes than Hasan’s perpetrated by state actors, including our own military. If you would condemn her her moment of selfishness, then you must also condemn any Iraqi who’s grateful for the US invasion.

All I know is if you shot me and a million dollars flew out of my asshole, I still wouldn’t thank the you, because I get the feeling that getting shot sucks. Especially when the others who got shot along with me ended up not only without the anal million, but dead.

And I think doing that in public is a little on the tacky side, too. Especially if you’re saying it where you know the relatives of people who didn’t make it through the same incident will hear you. OK (and perhaps unavoidable, human nature being what it is) to think, OK to pray in private, rather rude to say in public.

I’ve always thought so, too. Following that thought through - “Thank God for saving my life. Jesus was with me that day.” And what, everyone else who died had pissed him off or didn’t deserve to live?
