Family Tree - Nth cousin N times removed

Full Version:
What relationship has my daughter to my father’s mother’s sister’s son’s daughter’s daughter?

More symmetrical (and frankly easier to read version of the above):
How are the grandchildren of two cousins related?

Thanks.

3rd cousins.

Count the generations back until you get to siblings:

  1. The kids
  2. Their parents
  3. Their grandparents < siblings!
    3rd cousins.

They are great-great grandchildren of the same ancestor, so 3rd cousins

Thank You

Nth cousin means number of generations back to a common ancestor. To grandfather, first cousin. To Great grandfather, second cousin.

N times removed means the difference in the number of generations. If your grandfather was my great grandfather, we are once removed.

Number the generations sequentially, ascending from older generations to younger.
gen(x) is the generation number of person x.

Persons p1 and p2 are (Degree) cousins (Remove) removed where

Degree = min(gen(closest common ancestor)-gen(p1),gen(closest common ancestor)-gen(p2)) - 1
Remove = abs(gen(p1)-gen(p2))

Using this, you and your siblings are zeroth cousins, and you are your own (-1) cousin. You and your parents are zeroth cousins once removed.

How many Dopers can name any of their 3rd-cousins? I can’t. (I can name some of my kids’ 4th cousins, but that’s from their mother’s side.)

Nitpick: You and you uncle (or aunt, nephew or niece) are zeroth cousins once removed. You and your parent (if you want to carry the terminology that far) are (-1)th cousins once removed.

I’m in regular contact with a third cousin twice removed. I chanced upon a third cousin the other day because she’s dating the son of my ex-co-worker.

CCPGrey does a pretty good job of explaining how the family tree works here. :slight_smile:
