Famous Paintings - Parodies and Enhancements

Just lately I’ve been looking for interesting art work to display on my monitor at work. Just something to enliven the day.

There are many high-quality images of famous paintings on the net but by chance I came across a parody and from then on have searched out the unusual.

Today, let us enjoy a version of Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks:

Immediately get yourself a copy of Great Housewives of Art by Sally Swain.

Some examples here.

Of course there was a sequel, Great Housewives of Art, Revisited.

This one always cracks me up: link

An all-time classic.

L.H.O.O.Q., by Marcel Duchamp. It’s understated as a parody, but it’s a famous work in its own right. Also, bonus: it’s supposedly a French pun.

Probably the most parodied painting.

Aristotle with a Bust of Homer

Or maybe this one.

Here’s a Mona Lisa I like.

M. C. Escher’s Relativity

Here’s a more recent one I like: Vermeer

Here’s a parody of “Friends In Need” called “Full Dog House”. You can probably guess the artist.

Well, if we get to include actual works of (referential) art, then I’m bringing the Bacon

Pity this board doesn’t allow avatars – I’d totally be using this.

I was just at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. In the bookstore there I saw a book of Fine Art parodies. There was a whole section devoted to Hopper’s Nighthawks. Can’t recall the book title, though.

My favorite parody of that is a conceptual one, suggested by Dick Cavett. He described a picture of Aristotle Onassis looking at the Hollywood house of Buster Keaton. It would be Aristotle Contemplating the Home of Buster.

I really like this Scarlett Johansson version of Vermeer’s Girl With A Pearl Earring:

All of these crack me up, although I think my favorite is the Titian at the bottom of the page.

Edit: NM, wouldn’t work as a display

The Persistence of Salvador’s Cats: one of Dali’s greatest works.
