Fan or not, talk about what you hated in any version of Star Trek [spoilers]

…If memory serves (and often it doesn’t), the Marquis were mad because the Federation abandoned the people of those planets to Cardassian rule rather than try to help them emigrate into Federation territory.

Agreed – on TNG and Voyager, nobody ever suffered from stress. If any of the crew members started getting angry or paranoid, it was because subspace was distorting their brainwave patterns or their minds had been taken over by aliens.

One thing that gets me about the whole series (especially TNG and beyond) is that whole “we’ve progressed so far that we no longer use money or have greed” schtick. Using the Ferengi to make fun of capitalism, and all that. Pretty stupid, if you ask me.

It wasn’t half of Star Fleet but there were a lot who at least sympathized with the Marquis. From what I remember Star Fleet and the Cardassians redrew their borders to create a demilitarized zone and certain worlds came under the control of the Federation. I think some worlds under control of the Cardassians were suppose to become Federation worlds.

Understandably those living on the former Federation planets were plenty pissed that Star Fleet sold them out. Feeling betrayed many of them decided to stay and fight anyone, Cardassian or Federation, who attempted to force them from their homes. Some Federation officers ended up joining the Marquis and others were just sympathetic to their plight. The lamest treaty episode was TNG with the Native American planet.

Actually, you’ve got this backwards. According to the show, the Warp 10 caused Paris to Hyper-evolve, thus turning them into Amphibians.

No, it doesn’t make much sense, probably even less then “de-evolving”.

And, as has been pointed out (I think), the Doc had a cure for the condition. So, they could have all done the Warp 10 nasty, get a hypospray, and sleep at home that night.

Did the writers not see that? Or did they think we wouldn’t?

Apparently, there’s a lot of stuff we’re not supposed to notice.

Thank you. Allow me to be the second. From the first episode, that vile song succeeded in turning me off to the whole series. Not that there weren’t other reasons to be turned off.

But at least they didn’t have Wesley Crusher. Blech.

One of the things I hated in TNG was how Troi and the Doctor somehow became qualified to run the ship during battle or in time of crisis. Are you kidding me? A social worker commanding the Flagship in battle? That’d be like Warf saying “I’m almost done with my brain surgery correspondence course, I’ll be in the OR if you need me.”

Or even worse when Crusher was made into an acting Ensign and put in charge of other people. I’d sure as hell resent some snot nosed little brat being my immediate superior when he didn’t even graduate from the academy. Or in Voyager when they did that Year of Hell thing and Neelix became head of security. Most be a lot of pissed off Star Fleet officers who were next in line for promotion.

I thought much the same thing, actually. In a leisure society like the Federation, where people basically no longer have to work to survive, the quality of bad amateur writing, art and music that would be produced staggers the imagination. Even Geordi becomes a novelist for Chrissakes, and he admitted he couldn’t write.

Oh, and in defense of Counselor Troi — I can hardly believe I’m writing these words — Roddenberry’s original concept for TNG was that the Enterprise had evolved from a ship of rugged die-hard explorers into a full-fledged community in outer space, complete with families. Hence the need for a counselor, who did, in contrast to what some posters think, seem to keep pretty busy with ordinary conflicts and neuroses: Reg Barclay, the lady whose husband died, the occasional child suddenly orphaned following some horrible tragedy, etc.

Yes, so give her an office next to sickbay, not a Bridge chair!

Troi might have had a purpose in the stories, but a spot on the Bridge was not it.

Really? I never really watched any of the new Star tRek series, but this is realy stupid. Reminds me of a Sliders episode where money was free, or something like that, yet people still took in exchange for goods and services.
