I watched Fanboys last night, and I’m surprised that there’s apparently been no threads about it. I was expecting to be entertained by the injokes and bored by the story, but the story turned out to be quite good. The characters were deeper than you’d expect.
But, ah, the injokes. They came fast and furious, and often I was still chuckling over one and nearly missed the next. I may end up watching it again tonight. Dopers, what say you?
(Also, I asked my wife this morning if she likes Wookies, and she flashed me. Life is good.)
Huh. I was eagerly anticipating the movie, being a fan of Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Sam Huntington, Kristen Bell, and Star Wars.
But I honestly thought it sucked. Sure, the references were neat, and if I ever make a movie, I’m going to stuff it to the brim with little in-jokes like that (including the Wilhelm Scream, which always makes me giggle), but the plot was silly (especially the neutered cancer plot, which was mentioned at the beginning then promptly forgotten) and sometimes forced (the garbage chute), and the bits moving cross-country just felt like different skits with the same cast. It was less than the sum of its parts.
Were I any good at writing, my reviews would be quite similar to this.
I was gonna say exactly what JSexton said… they definitely did not forget the cancer plot, it’s central to the movie. I thought it was pretty good, though being a lesser star wars nerd (I enjoyed the movies, but I’m not a huge fan and I definitely don’t know anything past the movies) I’m sure I missed a lot of in-jokes. It was entertaining, if nothing else.
I enjoyed it. It wasn’t half as good as I was hoping it would be (I believe every Star Wars nerd was rewriting it in their head as they were watching to make it “better”), but I enjoyed it.
Also, I want to have Kristen Bell’s babies. Yowza.
I haven’t seen this yet (though I may), but I was amased when I read that they Harrison Ford himself sign off on the Six Days Seven Nights joke to make sure he wasn’t offended by it. Man obviously has a sense of humor.
Just saw the movie. Took me a little bit to recognize the doctor at the hospital as Carrie Fisher. Also, I too wish to have Kirsten Bell’s babies. At least she didn’t break out the faux Southern Belle accent she did occasionally on Veronica Mars. That accent turns me retarded when she does it.
The ending was bitter sweet, when I realized that the kid was getting to see Episode One… but he’d never get to see it with his friends.
Also, I lol’d at “Did Shatner have anything to do with this?”
