And, overall, I wasn’t impressed. I’ve watched several other Kevin Smith movies, so I got the gist of most of the inside jokes. But this only had a few redeeming qualities:
[ul]
Judd Nelson’s role as the cop.
Mark Hammill’s poking fun at himself as the Cock-Knocker.
Chris Rock, in general.
The tongue-in-cheek parodies of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, done by them.
The over-the-top jabs at comic books (including Daredevil in the chase scene with Dedrich Bader, since Smith wrote Daredevil for a while. And now Affleck is Daredevil in the new movie).
[/ul]
All in all, though…I was pretty disappointed. I can appreciate sexual humor as much as the next person, but Jason Mewes/Jay was just bordering on annoying in this. Kevin Smith was Kevin Smith.
For the most part, it sucked. Or was I expecting too much?
It isn’t a great movie, but it’s clear that everybody working on it was just having the best time of their lives, so I cut it a little slack. I look back on it as a huge self-indulgence for Kevin Smith; the chance to take all the remaining, disjointed ideas for his movie universe and get them out of his system and move on. And he took all his friends along for the ride.
And maybe I just have a weakness for elaborate, unjustifiable goofiness. Isn’t somebody in the movie wearing a “Berzerker” t-shirt with a picture of the Russian metal rocker from “Clerks”? Things like that.
I think I already posted my opinion in another thread, but I’ll just repeat it here…I seriously thought this movie should have been burned. Not just the prints, not just the DVD’s and videotapes, burn the damned original negative and bury it deep and sow the ground with salt so nothing will grow.
All right, that’s a bit much, but I still think this movie was a huge pile of shit and one of the most unfunniest comedies I’ve ever seen. The timing was completely off, the story was inane. I rank it right up there with “Death To Smoochy” as an example of how talented people can get together and make a utterly crappy and worthless film.
It hit exactly two notes: one was constantly repeating jokes that weren’t funny to begin with (like the “CLIT” movement) and the other was packing in as many has-been pop culture icons as a 90 minute film could possibly allow. I didn’t see this in theatres; instead, I rented the DVD, and still felt ripped off.
(To be fair, there was one DELETED scene that made me laugh…the scene in the comic book store with Jason Lee’s “Mallrats” character and the Walt and Steve/Dave guys. However, since this scene isn’t even in the movie, I can’t hardly give the movie credit for it.)
This movie is only funny if you’re a massive comic geek AND a star wars geek AND you’ve seen all of Smith’s films. I really enjoyed the movies and laughed at all the in-jokes (being all three), my girlfriend didn’t find it that great (being none of the above).
Basically the film was a big thank you from Smith to his geek fans.
It is a movie for Kevin Smith fans and a last goodbye for the Askiewaverse. If you were expecting anything else you should have read the back of the video cover.
What Tars said. My sister and I are big Kevin Smith fans and loved it.
The first time I saw it I’d dragged a gay friend along to the theatre (don’t like going to the movies alone) and spent the whole film squirming in my seat from embarassment. I guess the GLADD folks had a point. But I can see why non-Smith fans would think it’s total garbage.
Sorry but as A Kevin Smith fan, a Comic fan and a somewhat Star Wars fan, I found the movie weak very weak. The second he sent them on the road the movie failed.
There are a few god jokes but they are hard to find. The one great inside joke was on two of the deleted scenes involving ABCs cancellation of the Clerks Cartoon. (By the way If you haven’t seen it you should rent the DVD it is hilarious)
Sure it is an inside Joke but how many of those self indulgent films work and how many fail on so many levels? (Hudson Hawk anyone?)
You just finished watching it? I’m sorry. This movie makes me worry that Kevin Smith is being held hostage in a basement somewhere while some insane look-alike tries to ruin his career as a director/writer. I find it hard to believe that this movie was made by the same person, since I usually love his movies.
I found it hilarious, and the only KS films I’ve ever seen prior to it was Dogma, Mallrats and little bit of Clerks. Not a comic book fan. Big Star Wars fan, though. Anyway, I thought it was a fun movie.
I saw this movie in the theatre (saw and enjoyed all of Kevin Smith’s previous films) and found it to be 100% and completely worthless. An utter waste of my time. I didn’t like one joke in entire thing. I appreciate the fact that everyone who made it had a good time doing so, but I generally don’t pay $8 to stand and watch other people have a good time.
While I would put Jay and Silent Bob as the worst of the five -Askew movies, I still liked it. Sure, it was an obvious “wrap-up” film for Smith and the crew, but I thought lots of the humor was on target, enjoyed the in-jokes and found it just generally “fun”.
Would I have loved to see the Universe go out with a Clerks/Chasing Amy quality BANG? Sure. I knew going in that wasn’t going to happen, though.
It made me laugh and it never took itself seriously. That’s all I could really ask from a series conclusion comedy.
The one thing that irritates me above all else are people who call the Remote Control a “Clicker”! The damn thing doesn’t even click; they never have clicked and never will click! CALL IT WHAT IT IS!!!
Sorry about that little outburst, this just riles me up
What the hell?!? You make a list of what’s “redeemable” about the movie and don’t include Eliza Dushku in a leather cat-suit through much of the movie?
Apart from that, which was more than enough reason to see it, I thought it was just a shamefully stupid movie that ended up having one or two funny moments. Like:
Dawson telling the pie-fucker guy “You wouldn’t last five minutes on The Creek!”
Will Farrel’s character being named “Marshal Willenholly”
and okay, that was it. But it’s got Faith in leather!
