I’m dying to know what this was about.
I’ve been looking for video on it, but every site requires “platinum” membership. I can’t believe those two guys. From what I’ve heard, they were jawing at him during the game, then they just jumped into the field and sprinted at Gamboa. A father and son, and they had a knife!
Whoa
I doubt if they can technically be called “fans”.
Agreed
Too bad it was broken up so quickly. I would’ve loved to have seen the players work them over with a bat. Then again it was the Royals, so that might not have done much.
Also, how the hell did they get a knife into the stadium? What about all that “security”?
The clip I saw showed the two just as they reached Gamboa. They blindsided him, but it looked like once he went down he got some good kicks in on them before the Royals reached them.
From the link:
The father, identified by police as 34-year-old William Ligue Jr. of Alsip, and his 15-year-old son were led off the field in handcuffs.
This just makes it all more bizzare to me. What the hell kind of parent would take part in something like this with their kid?
Those two are lucky no Royal decided to take out an 0 for 5 game on their heads.
Bat, hell, they’re lucky nobody stomped on them with their spikes. They were both shirtless.
Maybe this should be in the pit . . .
I think it was a folded pocket knife. Like the cheapies that are Swiss Army knife wannabes. I had a Swiss Army knife in with all my camera gear and was never asked about it (up until 9/11 I even had it with my gear as carry-on and never had any one ask when I went through the airport or boarded the plane.)
Unlike a switchblade, the folding pocket knives are seen more as “tools” and since they can not really be whipped out in a hurry during the heat of battle, a lot of times they are overlooked as “weapons”.
Still, there would have been nothing to prevent them from folding open the blade while they were sitting quietly in the stands, before they rushed the field. Considering the way some sports fans get into fist fights in the parking lot and stands, you’d think security would take a tougher stance.
Geez, if I go to the theatre they pounce on me and make me take my cellphone or camera to the coatcheck. The art gallery takes my compacted umbrella away to coatcheck too. You think they’d try to make fans “check” their tools or “weapons”… (I mean that honestly, I know some technicians who always heave “leathermen” or similar utility gizmos on thier belts. Those gizmos have blades, but it would hnaver occur to them that they are technically “armed”.)
Woo, Chicago.
Why is it always here?! What the hell! At least Sox fans don’t get to make fun of Cub fans anymore like they did after the Dodgers fracas a coupla years ago. I was at that game. It was…surreal.
While we’re on this topic, I’d like to nominate 1st Base Umpire Matt Hollowell and White Sox 2nd Baseman Willie Harris for the Sir Robin Bravery Award, for bravely standing there with their thumbs up their asses while the Royals coach was being assulted less than 10 feet away from them.
You know, I was thinking the same thing after I signed off, but it was too late to amend my post. I was in a hurry, so I C&Ped CNN’s headline for a thread title. Now I’m hoping that this incident doesn’t taint the word “fan”.
And why did they go after a first-base coach? I can see a crazed “fan” going after a manager or a key player, but what did a first-base coach ever do to anyone? I almost want to cry for him.
Anyway, what I meant by “what this was all about” is, I’d love to know what these two have to say for themselves.
According to this link the coach “got what he deserved” because there had been an “exchange”. I read another account where they claimed the 1b coach flipped them off. Whatever. I really hope this a-hole gets real prison time.
I know they’ve had some pretty unusual promotions in Chicago over the years…but was it “Crack Night” at Comiskey?
Man, the things I missed out sharing with my father…
Crimeny. No offense to non-European football fans, but is it going to come to that? Ten-foot chain link fences around fields? And brawls in the stands? :::shudder:::
This may not be quite fair. Gamboa himself said that it happened so fast, he didn’t blame those nearest by for not being first to help. It must have been shocking, and being the closest in proximity could possibly have delayed their reaction time, rather than hastened it.
If Gamboa is gracious enough to not indict Hollowell and Harris, we can do the same.
That said, these two clowns deserve the harshest penalty the law can dish out.
Dagnabbit! I was caught between “non-American football” and “European football”. So I fumbled.
See how upset I am?
No offense intended to the Kansas City fans. As a St. Louisan, I’ve always found them to be great baseball fans.
But I vote for putting Daddy and his boy in the bleachers at Royals Stadium. For an entire game. Without an escort.
These things can have a way of working themselves out.
I agree. they probably had a huge dumbfounded moment of “No way! What the f**k?!!?” and by the time they came to their senses enough to move, the dugout was half-empty with players rushing to pummel the miscreants.
