Just checked, apparently this is possible, though we’d need to have a discussion about whether it’s desirable.
I’m liking this idea the best out of the ones we’ve proposed.
3 divsion winners + 1 wildcard sounds good.
Considering the keeper league has been going for 6(?) years now, and the all pro league has had the same people for 3, it looks like we can have enough long termers to make this practical.
At first blush, this is also my favorite idea of the ones proposed.
The neat thing about the 12-team, 3-division setup is that it’s symmetrical: you play your own division twice (6 games) and every other team once (8 games).
So, what now? Wait for the fantasy football regulars to get out of bed and post their thoughts here?
That sounds custom made for awesome.
By the way, if you’d like to commish it, that’s fine with me. I don’t need to be the commish for all the leagues I’m in - I just happen to be the guy who’s so anxious for football he jumps the gun and opens football related competitions left and right.
I can give you advice in PMs about who I know to be reliable, active, etc.
I wouldn’t mind commishing it. Probably a good idea to spread the workload around a bit; you’re running three, and Ellis spends a ton of time running the workload-intensive keeper league (and he does a bang-up job of it, I must say).
Googling for ideas on dynasty leagues brought up this site, which has a lot of them. Check out the tables in the middle of the page. The guy discusses basically the same issues with serpentine drafting that we just did. Using the Football Guys fantasy pick value chart as a basis, it looks like the method that yields the least advantage to anyone would be to take a traditional serpentine draft order, and then invert the 3rd Round and do nothing else (so the guy who picks last in Round 1 picks first in Rounds 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 etc.). I don’t know that I trust the Football Guys chart as gospel, however, and might be more inclined to go for something a little more conservative, like “switch serpent” from the table, or your idea.
What’s the difference between a dynasty league and a keeper league?
In a keeper league, you have the option to retain a certain number of players from one year to the next, forfeiting draft picks in the process, but the majority (generally the large majority) of your roster gets turned over and only a relatively small number of players are held back from next year’s draft.
In a dynasty league, you generally hold on to your entire roster from one year to the next. A player is only removed from your roster if he’s dropped, traded, or if he retires. From the second year on, the league’s draft is just for rookies. The benches are generally quite deep, as you’re going to be stashing developmental prospects there. As a result there’s very little help to be had from free agency or waivers; the only ways to improve your roster are through trades, and drafting incoming rookies.
For easy reference, the current scheduled date and time for the four FF leagues. Dates subject to change, consult local listings, etc.
**
8/27, Thursday, 9:00 PM EDT – SDMB Big League
8/31, Monday, 9:00 PM EDT – All-Pro FFL (I think)
9/2, Wednesday, 9:00 PM EDT – Auction Draft (espn.com draft, then Yahoo)
9/7, Monday, 10:15 PM EDT – He Hate Me Keeper League**
We were discussing whether or not we should assign draft positions randomly or based on the order of finishing last year and decided that for a redraft league it made more sense to do it randomly. But it’d make sense in a dynasty league for it to be the reverse order of standings.
Of course this only matters for next year - just throwing out the idea now.
Along those lines, the keeper league uses the consolation bowl to determine the top four draft positions. Winner gets #1 overall, last gets #4. The remainder of the draft order is reverse order of finish, so last place in the league gets #5 and the league winner drafts last.
This prevents sandbagging for draft position while adding a little juice to the consolation bowl.
I’ve created an interest list thread for the potential dynasty league to see if we can get enough participants to make it worthwhile. If you’re interested in playing in our dynasty league, please make a post there.
In the yahoo custom schedule editing there’s an ability to set a rivalry week. Does marking a week that way have any functional change?
I would guess it means that whatever games are scheduled that week are repeated that week ad infinitum.
Just a heads up, I started the Pick 'em, survival, and salary cap leagues.
I"m in on the salary cap league.
Joined the survival league.
The thread I linked to is for discussion regarding those leagues, so feel free to post there.
Okay, what’s with the yahoo draft dates? A week ago, the last possible date to set your draft was September 7. Now it’s Sep 9.
I was going to suggest we move the big league to the 8th as we discussed before, but on second thought, we should probably use that date for the dynasty league (or whatever it ends up becoming) - it gives us more time if we need it to fill it up.
Any idea what the rhyme and reason is behind the yahoo schedulable dates?
On second thought… the date to cut down to a 53 man roster is Sep 5. In both the big league, and the dynasty league, we’re going to be drafting a whole lot of people. It’s possible that some of the people drafted won’t make the final cuts if we held the draft before that. So I suppose we should hold both the big league and dynasty drafts after Sep 5. Since the 5th, 6th, and 7th are a holiday weekend and the keeper league is already drafting on the 7th, and currently yahoo (unless it changes again) allows scheduled drafts up until Sep 9, I think we’re going to have to cram the drafts onto back to back nights of Sep 8/9.
I went ahead and created a league to hold a draft date (currently Sep 9 at 9pm eastern). We have time to resolve the league type/rules issue, and someone else can commish if they want, I just wanted to reserve the time slot because if you don’t get them early the good draft times get booked.
The Big League currently is set to draft for Sep 8, so Sep 9 is really our only option if we want to draft post-final cuts and not on the holiday weekend.
