Farewell, Interminable No. 2

The rebuilding of Pearson Airport in Toronto continues, and as of 11:59PM tomorrow, they will close Terminal 2. Its duties will be taken over by an expansion to the new Terminal 1, which includes more security facilities and systems for separating flows of passengers going to different destinations. It will be demolished over the next year or so. Part of it is already gone, including the bit that I used to fly to the Soo from.

I went to the airport this afternoon to see the little commemorative display they had. I scribbled my name in a book, and snagged a brochure and a pencil.

Terminal 2 was linear in layout, and was noted for the very long walks needed to get from one end to the other. Hence the nickname. It had been renovated from time to time, and didn’t seem that bad… until I got to part of the departures area that was jammed with people, with lineups extending down the corridor.

Now all we need is a subway or streetcar line to the airport. Or at least a decent bus terminal.

I’ve never heard that description for it before, but it’s a good one. I’ve been through Terminal 2 a number of times, and in the last couple of years or so it just seemed to get emptier and emptier and the walking distance longer.

That is SO not what I was expecting this thread to be about.

Ugh. I remember once, many years ago, trying to catch a flight from Toronto to LA on January 4, the day after a major blizzard. The lineup that time was two and a half times the length of the terminal. My worst-ever airport experience, despite the best (worst?) efforts of LAX employees.

Hah! I remember when you couldn’t even get to the airport by TTC at all; you had to go to Islington Station and catch a private shuttle.
