Farewell Nostalgia Critic

His Power Rangers retrospectives are oddly compelling, despite the fact that I haven’t seen, or given any thought to the show since I was 14 or so.

I only discovered the Nostalgia Critic/Channel Awesome a month or two ago, so I’m a bit bummed about his retirement.

Which boss?

My favourite is Sfdebris. He reviews scifi, mostly Star Trek. His hate for Neelix is really funny. http://blip.tv/sf-debris-opinionated-reviews

Considering that Spoony raped his boss a few years back, you’d think calling him a name wouldn’t faze him so much.

I might be wrong about this, but I think it was Holly, one of the Chanel Awesome producers. Either that or someone in HR.

Doug isn’t Spoony’s boss. Michael Michaud is the CEO of CA. Doug is the headline performer and co-head writer. Now, Doug might have some sort of creative executive powers on the site, but he not actually everyone’s boss - he just plays that the Nostalgia Critic is.

Does Doug own thatguywiththeglasses.com? Along with his brother, that is?

No. From what I can gather, Michael Michaud is the owner, or CEO, and the Walker brothers (Doug and Rob) were the first people he contacted when gathering talent. As the site’s main writer, director, and star, Doug probably has some sway when it comes to picking new talent, but he doesn’t run the site. He wouldn’t have been the guy in charge of firing Spoony, for example.

To get back to the beginning of the thread, though, i’d agree that To Boldly Flee is the weakest of the anniversary movies. There’s way too much drama and pretentiousness for a movie about internet nerds saving the world from movie supervillians and a Planeteer impersonator, the action constantly drags to a halt so the characters can preach about why SOPA (which died months ago anyway) is bad, and the extended Star Wars/Trek parodies aren’t as funny as Doug thinks they are. The best moments would have to be the interplay between Terl and Zod, especially when Zod and Nostalgia Chick do their big musical number (which made me wonder if Jim Steinman is ghostwriting for them now). It was definitely an ambitious project, but it’s just not as good as Kickassia was and gets way too maudlin and melodramatic for its own good.

Also, I have absolutely no idea why the Angry Video Game Nerd was dressed like one of the guys from Daft Punk.

I do not work for the website and this is in no way a plug. I just thought I’d pass this info. on to those interested.

Doug’s new show Demo Reel just started Tuesday and the first episode(a double length one is online).

The first 20 minutes were…very bad, in my opinion. However, I liked the second half, which got rid of introducing our characters and got on with the moderately funny Batman movie stuff.

Not a great episode and it does not earn my strong recommendation, but for now I will watch a 20 minutes episode once every two weeks, which is the scheduled release for now.

Again, don’t judge this too hard. It’s not a very strong “pilot” episode, but shows some promise.

Demo Reel episode 1 link.

No you’re not. Although I basically can’t stand anyone on that site with the vague exception of Lindsay and even then her vocal patterns make me want to slap her. I’d rather read her reviews than watch them. And I don’t think you can really call what Doug did reviews. Angry summaries, maybe. I do love that he thinks In the Dark of the Night from Anastasia is an awesome song and Lindsay thinks it’s shit.

He’s back!!!

That’s the rumor anyway, though I have yet to watch this week’s Demo Reel.

Wikipedia is saying he will return on February 5.
:D:D:D

I guess that he was still getting viewership statistics delivered to him in the Plot Hole.

Agreed. His crappy, predictable jokes go on way too long and he goes way over the top/tries too hard. Don’t really miss him; much prefer Lindsey, who’s always great for thoughtful analysis and fun without inducing cringes. Though the Nella stuff can get annoying too…

I’ve watched the video. He is definitely coming back:

  1. Only every 2 weeks.

  2. No date limit on his reviews. He wants to review thing up to current movies.

Really made my day.

Well that was unexpected.

I didn’t care for demo reel and I’m happy he’s returning to his roots. Trying to come up with new material, week after week, can burn anyone out (I know, I used to run a website myself). Hopefully by giving himself more time to pursue side projects he’ll be able to keep the creative juices flowing.

Along with the Cinema Snob and Spoony the NC has been one of the few online reviewers to genuinely make me laugh out loud. While I do watch and enjoy some of the other critics, those would be my top three list.

I agree that Demo Reel was not amazing, but I do wish they’d continue it on a monthly(or even every other month) schedule. It actually was rather charming.

I agree about Spoony and Brad being great, but Spoony has faded a bit. His quality is OK sometimes, but his output is nearly zero compared to what he used to do.

I’d say my favorite online reviewers are:

  1. Doug Walker - Nostalgia Critic
  2. James Rolfe - The Nerd. I also like Mike Matei from here.
  3. Spoony - I still watch his older and classic reviews. I’d rank him lower going off current material.
  4. Matthew Buck - Bad Movie Beatdown(FilmBrain)
  5. Eric(?) Rodriguez - Blockbuster Buster
  6. Linsey Ellis - Nostalgia Chick
  7. Brad Jones - I actually watch little of his work, but he is a fun guy.

You like E-rod? I mean, I don’t hate him, but I stopped watching him and didn’t really feel like I missed anything. He’s got this very hyper energy and fast talking, along with a plot that always feels like I’m missing something, like there’s some depth from the past. I don’t know why.

Spoony is good with good material. In fact, I can say that about most of the reviewers on that site. Only Doug as NC is good even with the worst material.

I have to admit, I was really starting to enjoy Demo Reel as its own thing, parody with a real genuine story line, mixed with a sitcom. I just still think it was not a fit for the site, nor was it ever going to be even 1% as big as the Nostalgia Critic.

I actually find myself a little ambivalent, somewhat bummed out that Demo Reel can’t continue. As I’ve said on the forums there, my ideal would have been to have both of them once a month. Still, I can’t be unhappy that the Nostalgia Critic is back.

For those who care, his first “return” review is online today at his site.

I am in no way affiliated with that site. I just know some folks would like to know.

i’m so glad he’s back! i like the nostalgia chick quite a bit too, but i really missed the critic. i couldn’t get through a single episode of demo reel. one of the problems for me was i can’t really get into it when they try to do stuff with storylines and character arcs- i haven’t watched any of the anniversary movies like to boldly flee or surburban knights cause it doesn’t hold my interest. i just want to see them review/analyze movies and crack jokes. i do enjoy sibling rivalry though and i hope they keep that up.

It was a pretty good review, actually. Nice to have him back and nice to see the Demo Reel cast in the show as well.
