Fargo Season 5 discussion (Starts 21NOV2023)

“Forget it Jake, it’s Fargotown.”

Yeah, but a person can be good and decent, expect others to generally be the same, yet still pick up on nonverbal tensions and be able to read a room. There’s a downward scale from ‘assuming the best in others’ to ‘naivete’ to ‘downright cluelessness’.

I was also wondering in the dinner scene: was Wayne really that clueless, or was he more like “Dot seems to have matters in hand; I’ll just ride with this and see how it goes”? Scotty certainly had a fixed smile that seemed to say “This is weird AF. Not sure what the heck is going on, but I’ll let the adults handle it”.

In any case, I hope Wayne doesn’t get too many emails from Nigerian princes.

It was helped by the electrocution but he basically decided to give away a car

Yeah, he would be a soft mark for anybody, which was part of the impetus for Lorraine to have Greaves look into Dot’s background.

As she notes at the end, he does the paperwork and is nominally in charge of their growing car dealership (how they can expand a new car business in late 2020 when sales bottomed out is beyond me), now that she no longer fears discovery, she does the back of house with the strategy and such, i.e. she’s the real brains of the operation

I wouldn’t say that was cluelessness so much as a life where he’s never really had to deal with any real hardship or any truly bad people, which led to a bit of naivete

My wife and I both wondered if, once Munch ate the biscuit and smiled and the screen went black, he finally died. They left it ambiguous but that’s pretty much the only proper ending.

Also, props to my wife. When we saw the episode title “Bisquik”, she said “biscuits?” I said “Probably pancakes. Scottie loves pancakes.” Well, she was nailed it.

I think he will start to age and die naturally in the future

Very Biblical. Vengeance vs. grace for the settling of debts, with the final scene being the simple act of accepting and eating of bread (communion) for the complete forgiveness of sins. Grace wins out.

Overall I loved this season and was sad to see it end.

Yep. It’s definately top tier Fargo, along with the first season with Billy Bob and Martin Freeman.

There was that subtle reaction Munch had when Dot first suggested that maybe a debt could be forgiven that was absolutely stellar.

You could see the idea had never occurred to him through 5 centuries and it was almost a revelation. Just great physical acting

Haven’t read any comments about ep 10 so I don’t get spoiled, but apparently this episode aired on the 16th. Today is the 18th, and Amazon tells me it’s not yet available even though I purchased the season. Checked on an iPad and desktop. Wtf, how was it “aired” if it’s not available?

“This episode is included with your season pass. We’ll email you when it’s available.”

I thought there was a possibility of him crumbling to dust.

She didn’t seem to be all that upset. Like she thought that if she needed to she could take him.

Sure but she might have had to do that in front of her husband and daughter. I think she wouldn’t want them to see any of that.

And BTW, when Munch/Moonk mentioned the pound of flesh thing, I wondered if he’d accept the chili as representative of that.

Been thinking a bit more on the biblical aspects: a lot of contrast between vengeance and grace, Old Testament and New Testament. The biscuits not only had the symbolism of the eucharist, but also had elements of the promised land: milk and honey. Munch was not just forgiven of his sins, he made it to the Promised Land.

Whit’s death seemed sacrificial too. He always seemed more than ready to face death on behalf of Dot, for instance leading the swat team into the ranch with little-to-no protection for himself. Plus, stepping into the “grave” to ultimately allow Dot’s Satan-figure to kill him instead of her. Roy was obviously waiting for Dot so he could finish her off, instead Whit showed up, and his “goodness” and his need for justice cost him his life.

:woman_facepalming: Good catch!

Can we please have a spin off series telling the backstory of Munch?

A man would be okay with that.

So the whole Wizard of Oz thing didn’t seem to go anywhere.

A man is grateful.

And now you know how season 6 will start, with Dot being arrested for poisoning him.

The message at the end was that love (and a good biscuit) finally relieved Munch of his burden. A man can now just enjoy a good biscuit with friends. Whether that ends his immortality, kills him on the spot, or lets him go on killing except in a better mood is left as an exercise for the viewer.

Since none of it is ever really explained, I’m good with that. He’s just another Coen brothers weirdness, Like Anton Chigurh (sp), the flying saucer, and Ray Wise as the dapper devil. None of it was ever really explained.
