Is it possible to have a left wing fascist? I’ve seen many definitions (from dictionary.com and princeton.edu) which define fascism as being independent of economic ideology. The political compass site also describes fascism as a system of government, which leads me to believe it’s possible to have a left wing fascist.
Are there any examples of a left wing fascist? What about Stalin? Is it even possible to have one?
Thanks.
If you’re thinking of a common denominator between the extreme left and the extreme right, the word you’re probably looking for is “authoritarianism” or “statism”.
Well, if you examine Dr. Lawrence Britt’s 14 Characteristics of Fascism, you will see that the answer is No. Left-wing adherents would not fit #5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 or 13.

There was no sexism in the soviet union?
Well, you gotta remember that the USSR only thought they were left-wing. They talked the socialist game, but at the heart they were as corrupt and decadent as the capitalists. But under the Soviets, women had access to all of the higher professions, IIRC. In fact, I seem to remember reading documentation that noted that at the time of the fall of the USSR, the majority of doctors in the country were female. I shall try to find that cite.
(But honestly…wherever there are balls, there is going to be sexism!)
Cambodia under Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge was definitely anti-intellectual (#11), as was China during the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s-70s. Russia under Lenin and Stalin and today’s North Korea are police states (#12). And the Soviet Union throughout the communist period was well known for its corruption and cronynism (#13), which continues in the post-communist era.
#8 & 9 are the real definers of Fascism, as opposed to plain old Totalitarianism. Mussolini set up “The Corporate State.”
