Mentioning Gandhi is a red herring. He obviously wasn’t living in the same world the rest of us do:Gandhi lived just at the very end of the era when his methods could be useful against a determined enemy: Stalin’s Soviet Union or modern China wouldn’t even notice his tactics and the world would never hear of those who put them into practice. Therefore, mentioning him in a modern debate is pointless.

Minister considers claiming compensation from Israel

Ulla Tørnæs, minister for development co-operation, said the Foreign Ministry is investigating the possibility of seeking compensation from Israel for attacks on Danish aid projects in Gaza. The death toll in the area has risen to an estimated 900 since the bombardment began two weeks ago and a number of Danish humanitarian aid projects have been caught up in the conflict.

Three ambulances belonging to Danish humanitarian organisation DanChurchAid were destroyed by Israeli bombs last week. A clinic in Gaza City, which was also financed by DanChurchAid, was destroyed by an Israeli attack at the weekend. No one was hurt in either attack.

The bombardment also damaged a centre for torture victims that the Rehabilitation and Research Centre for Torture Victims (RCT) has been running in the area for more than 20 years with the cooperation of a local Palestinian organization.

There you go, Rune. Maybe now you can share some of that ‘outrage’ with Israel.

Being nuanced and multifaceted I leave entirely in your loving and capable hands, since you have a long track record of looking at it from all sides. So I take it you agree with borderline/undeniable anti-Semitic? And you still haven’t explained what a dead Indian dude has to do with shouting “Kill Jews” in Copenhagen.

Oh and we had another Gaza demonstration yesterday. Of course it all ended up in a riot in central Copenhagen, with burning flags and things, rocks flying at the police, 110+ arrested. The police had to call in the military to defuse unexploded homemade explosives. I wasn’t there so I’m able to comment on the Nazi, death to Jews angle.

Republican communities have been known to fly the Palestinian flag and Unionist areas sometimes have the Israeli flag flying too apparently.

Incidentally here’s an interview with a Danish Jew from Danish television on how he saw the demonstration, and what it is like to be a Jew living in Denmark today (my translation)

Mads Steffensen, Host: You are a Danish Jew, you live here in Copenhagen, and you feel threatened in your their daily life. How do you feel it personally?

Claus Bentow: I have experienced it in several different ways. I’ve experienced on my way to work, that cars drive up close behind me when and throw things out of the windows and shout ‘jahud’ - which is Arabic for Jew. I’ve met a Muslim private school class dancing in the rear end of the bus and shouting death to the Jews, while I sat with my 3yo daughter up the front. I have been attacked, corporal, had stones thrown at me, and people who wanted to beat me up, and so on and so on.

Mads Steffensen - and they can spot. Who is it, who are shouting these things. Who is it, which are threatening you?

Claus Bentow: These things have been mostly Muslims, radical Muslims, Islamists, but I also think the Danish extreme left can sign up under these banners.

Mads Steffensen - and they can spot you on account of the skull cap?

Claus Bentow: The cap, yes, but now I have completely stopped wearing it, without having a hat on top of it. … But that is why they can spot it.

Mads Steffensen: And your wife has also experienced threats, but she didn’t like to appear in public here. What has she experienced?

Claus Bentow: Yes, she has been threatened. She has been spitted on one, two three times. For instance, she has been threatened in the Metro, has been spit on by an old Arab man whom had seen her Star of David around her neck. She has been spitted on as she was leaving the bus with our nine year old baby …

Mads Steffensen: This Saturday you participated in a demonstration [on the main square of Copenhagen] because of the war in Gaza. We have some pictures of it here. What was the purpose of the demonstration?

Claus Bentow: The aim was nothing more than to express a desire for peace, and show that Israel wants peace, even if it needs to fight terrorism. Yes, that was basically the message we had. Just that. Nothing more.

Mads Steffensen: And there was also a counter demonstration, that day - we have some pictures.

Mads Steffensen: What do you think when you see these pictures?

Claus Bentow: I feel physically ill. It depressing, fear, and all the hope I once had about some sort of peaceful coexistence, either in the Middle East, or here, all this, I have stopped believing in. I can only see this - it reminds me completely of the Nazis in World War II, it is the same slogans, it is the same they say and it is the same they want. It is absolutely horrible.

Mads Steffensen: Now you are a father too far, what are you going to do to protect your children?

Claus Bentow: I try whenever possible, to keep them away. I have kept them out of school…Now one has to ask oneself weather these are tolerable conditions to live under, or if one should move. To – I don’t know – New York, other places, Israel perhaps, to be able to live a tolerable life as a Jew.

It’s been years since I was in Britain… Unionist = Loyalist, ie., pro-Britain, right?

Yes. Although Unionist usually refers to the moderate political end of the movement whereas Loyalist refers to physical force Unionism, ie terrorist organisations.
