Fast Internet UPLOAD in Chicago?

I have a small business videotaping concerts. Work is seasonal - I’ve shot and edited 11 concerts over the last two months, after shooting none in the three months before those.

I upload sample songs from the complete concerts in HD. The problem is that my AT&T DSL upload speed is terrible, roughly 375k. I could switch or upgrade my DSL, but as I said, the work is seasonal and I would be stuck paying for upload speed I don’t need the rest of the year.

So I single 3 minute song takes most of the day to upload. I would love to find some place where I could upload a big chunk of video at once. Any suggestions?

There are a bunch of internet cafes in Chicago. Of course they don’t list their up/download speeds other than to say they’re super-fast. I would think a place with desktops to rent with dedicated lines would be the fastest, rather than using your laptop at a place with just wifi. I would google the closest place to me and ask them.

Of course I don’t know what’s fast for uploading, since I don’t do much aside from the occasional youtube video. They don’t seem to take all that long but they’re just a couple minutes. I have RCN cable internet - $40 a month for 25Mbps down and 2.0Mbps up. Depending on what you pay for DSL it still might be worth it, but I have no idea how much difference in time 2.0 will get you.

Yeah, I have never seen any internet cafe spell out their speed, which is why I asked.

There is a bit of an initial investment to buy the mifi (a.k.a. “jetpack”) unit, but after that it looks like you can just pay for it whenever you need it. According to this if you are in a 4G coverage area, you would get an average 5.86 mbps upload rate.

I have no experience with Verizon data plans or their mifi unit.

I do have the Virgin Mobile 3G version of the mifi unit and it works quite well, but the data rate isn’t the best. Mine is a 3G, not 4G, unit and Virgin Mobile operates on the Sprint network which the above article reported to be the slowest network. I got it because at the time it was the only mifi unit that did not require an annual contract to activate.
