The body of a pedestrian was found in a ditch by a passerby at 07:40 Monday morning . He was apparently hit by the side mirror of a ‘truck’. The article doesn’t say if it was a semi-trailer, or a pick-up. Could’ve been either one. It happened on the road between the freeway and my home on the beach. I know right where it happened. It was by the Babe Ke .
The article I linked to in the first line says the guy may have been there for days. That road can be pretty busy, and it’s dark at night. I suspect the hit-and-run happened ‘in the middle of the night’.

Is it possible the truck driver wasn’t even aware he had struck someone?
It’s possible, even if it was a large pick-up I suppose. If it was a semi, I could see how it could happen in the daytime (the more likely time for semi traffic), and maybe no one saw it.

Very doubtful. The guy that hit me only stopped because of the sound. He didn’t feel the hit.
How do they know it was the side mirror that struck him?
Hm. The link in the OP seems to have gone bad. Try copying and pasting this link:

The evidence suggests Reynolds was struck in the head by a passenger side mirror while he walked east along the westbound side of the road, about 2 ½ miles east of Birch Bay, said Dr. Gary Goldfogel, the Whatcom County medical examiner. The severity of his injuries indicated he was knocked unconscious on impact.

Several pieces of debris from a truck were recovered from the scene. State troopers were working Tuesday to determine the make and model of the vehicle, and declined to release details about what exactly they recovered.

Well I guess that makes it unlikely the driver was unaware, unless he was drunk or something.
There has been an arrest.

On Tuesday evening Kenneth Lee Kelly, 37, called 911 from a store in Burlington to tell state troopers he hit the man near Birch Bay, said Sgt. Mark Francis of the state patrol. Troopers booked Kelly into Whatcom County Jail around 10 p.m.
“I don’t know any details as far as what he said” to dispatchers or troopers, Francis said.
Kelly owned a blue Dodge Ram pickup, a match to the debris found at the scene, Francis said. He has been convicted of driving with a suspended license five times in the past 10 years. Court records show he served a 16-month prison sentence for delivering heroin in 2014, and completed his probation in August 2016.
The time of the crash remains unclear.
