Even if the father was a total bigot and demanded it be written “Murdered By Sand Niggers” it’s free speech and the government has not say. Also “Muslim Terrorist” does not denigrate all Muslims only Muslims who support and participate in terrorism.
Would you please read the damned OP? The plaque was supposed to be in city hall.
Sorry didn’t read it completely. But the latter part of my post still applies.
Well, no, that does make a difference. A city hall location implies a certain offical and governmental approval of the sentiments expressed. I wouldn’t approve even if it were an entirely private cemetary, for instance, but that would be none of my beeswax. But the publicly official status puts it quite beyond the pale, so far as I’m concerned.
The 9-11 terrorists were Muslims? Who knew? I think that this grieving father needs to bring this little-known fact to our attention.
Gee, Curtis LeMay spouts an opinion before gathering even the most basic of facts.
Who’d have thunk it?
They certainly have a say on a memorial they are putting up in a building they own.
They asked to father offer something to put on the memorial. He chose to exercise his free speech and offer something that does not memorialize his son and instead vilifies(though appropriately) his murders. They have no obligation to accept his offer. If I was in the towns position I would reject his offer too.
None of my business what he wants on his sons tombstone. He paid for it.
No shit.
Of course, when it’s a memorial stone that will hang in city hall, and it looks like TAXES will pay for it, I think it IS your (and my!) business.
Yes, we know they were terrorists who were motivated by religious extremism, in part. However, that’s not the point of a memorial, and it seems the father only wants to use the plaque as a way of expressing his views, rather than honoring his son.
True, but this isn’t a tombstone, it was to be a plaque at city hall.
From the article in the OP:
What the hell? Are you now making up sentences by throwing random word magnets at your refrigerator?
Gee, gonzomax does not gather the most basic of facts before posting either. And posts an hour after this error has been noted specifically. Who’d have thunk it?
That may just be an improvement in his debate techniques.
Since when are memorials like this about “accuracy”? There are plenty of completely accurate things that could be stated – quite simply, this detracts from the purpose of a memorial, which is to honor the dead, and not to allow the living to air political (or whatever) grievances.
Maybe the plaque should say something about the relative humidity on the day this occurred, and what the top-selling singles were?
Why should that matter?
This is what you get when you let 14 year old kids post on a message board.
As a compromise:
“James Gadiel (1978-2001), a gentleman and a gentle man, murdered by goat fucking sons of bitches.”
The article shows a tombstone with the inscription. It does not show a plaque. Is there a tombstone like that?
No, there is not. If you look a bit more closely at the “picture” of the tombstone, you can see that it is an artist’s drawing. The inscription on this artist drawing reads:
"Murdered
by Muslim Terrorists
Accurate
or Offensive?
If you read the article, you will see that it clearly talks about “a plaque in the town hall.”
Please read in future, and don’t rely purely on artistic drawings.
this is lame…what the plaque should say is:
“murdered by airline lobbying and anti-regulation politicans that prevented locked doors from being installed in airline cockpits.”
gee, how many hijackings were there before 2001? and the US airline industry couldn’t even be bothered with locked doors? WTF!
