Shadrach, all the way.
You are a stronger woman than I. Ow, my wallet.
Very tough. I’ll say Egg Man.
Would it be cheating to say “B Boy bouillabaisse”? Or is this a case of “don’t bouillabaisse me, bro!” (Actually, minute for minute I prefer The New Style, but still.)
Intergalactic!!!
(I LOVED that song and blasted it in the car when I drove my daughter to her dance lessons. She thought it unseemly that a woman of my advanced years would like such a thing instead of, oh, Barry Manilow. I had to break it to her that I had been listening to the Beastie Boys before she was BORN.)
I would have to go with Intergalactic except for the fact that it just bugs me that they have the line, “Like a pinch from the neck of Mr. Spock” as though Mr. Spock’s neck is doing the pinching.
So instead I am going to have to go with Sure Shot.
My daughter loves Body Movin’ because it is a song on her Wii Dance Now game. Imagine her annoyance to have her dad and I start singing along with it. Hahahaaa! She’s quite the little nerd* and doesn’t “like” hip hop. I put ‘like’ in scare quotes, because she likes hip hop just fine when it is pumped through the tube of her anime djs and games.
Man, I honestly can’t believe that hip hop is to her what Motown was to me as a teenager. I am so old.
*I realize that nerds can like hip hop. But my 13 year old daughter is just a bit hostile to hip hop culture. I’m working on her. Failing, but I still trying. I made her memorize some hip hop songs verbatim. Is that wrong?
If your goal is to get her to hate hip hop, then no, it’s not wrong
OMG so many to choose from - and I love everyone’s comments so far - glad to see I’m not the only Beastie fanatic here.
My vote (I’ll try to go with something that hasn’t been picked yet)
LOOKIN’ DOWN THE BARREL OF A GUN
No, silly, I know it’s wrong. I’m doing it anyway. She already hates hip hop. Too bad. Suck it up and spit these 18 bars or it’s bed with no supper.
Part of me hopes that one of those songs was “Hit 'Em Up” by Tupac, cuz that would be ridiculously hilarious coming from a little kid’s mouth, but the other part of me realizes that that would be *really, really *wrong.
Paul Revere.
Fire up Audacity and check it out in reverse! They nearly chucked the track until someone played it backwards - Genius that person!
Check the lyrics: The line actually goes, “Like a pinch in the neck from Mr. Spock.” :smack:
I’m going Shake Your Rump too. Its just so fun and funny, lyrically. And there’s that funky crazy keyboard/bass thing going on.
I mean, c’mon! My man MCA’s got a beard like a billy goat! Woot woot!
I have listened to this song so many damn times that the number cannot be counted by ordinary mortals. In the official released version they definitely say “pinch from the neck of Mr. Spock.” Video here, the line occurs at the 3:28 mark.
Yeah, the lyrics in Paul’s Boutique have a lot of mismatches as well. I too have heard “of mister spock”, and the fact that their lyrics are sometimes off is evidence that it probably is in this case as well.
Today my favorite track is “Shadrach.”
Tomorrow it will be “Gratitude.”
The OP didn’t say I couldn’t have daily favorites.
That is the reason I love it! It showed their sense if humour.
It was a satire, but they didn’t have a problem with the song until people took it seriously and it started to define them. It’s not close to my favorite song of theirs, but it is fun. The vibe is not out of place with the rest of that first album in terms of the themes of partying and drinking and unlike a lot of the rest of the album, there’s nothing about guns or violence and no casual sexism. On the other hand the song is very juvenile and there’s nothing in it that gives you a sense of their intelligence or how well they could write or rap.
I wanted to pick one of their rap songs, but Body Movin’ wins my vote.
