Woburn?
Yes, it was the Red Robin in Woburn. I’m sure the pandemic was a factor in the closing but it was seldom busy even on Saturday nights before the pandemic. We’ve also been to the one in Manchester, NH when flying in/out of the airport there and that one was always busy. It just didn’t catch on in Woburn.
you missed a few ca/ west coast chains… although hardees is now just reskinned carls juniors … and my dad who lived in ca in the late 60s to the mid 70s is totally mystified that jack in the box aka "gag in the bag "is still in business oh and der weinerschnitzel although the only reason they sell burger is their chili needs a plate…
was my now long gone tommie’s the only one that had a triple chili cheese burger ? we used to call them gut bombs … and the shakes… they were just softened ice cream syrup and milk tossed in a blender …
My uncle who lives in orange county swears by the hat… but says every time he goes there for a burger he always ends up getting the pastrami
In and out became popular when people wanted a simple burger like they had back in the 50s/and 60s …
Irrespective of the poll and my previous response, my all-time favorite burger is the bacon cheeseburger from Roy Rogers. There was a Roy’s basically in the parking lot of the Safeway I worked at for a long time (until the Roy’s closed and it became an Exxon) and on my breaks I had just enough time to walk over there and get a bacon cheeseburger. Highlight of my day back then, and I never got tired of it. There’s just not that many Roy’s around any more. They still exist, and are slowly coming back, but I’d still have to drive quite a ways out of my way to get to one nowadays.
My fave burgers used to be the ones we got at 11:30 PM in the hospital where I did my residency. When the kitchen closed down for the night, they’d sell all the leftover burgers to the residency staff who were on call in house that night for a sum of $1 for the whole load. Known as gut bombs, we’d consume them with gusto in between dashing off to the ER or ICU or delivery suite for the rest of the night. One famous resident consumed 12 of them in a single night.
Until admin stopped the practice due to the ‘unfairness’ of not giving the same deal to the night shift workers. Keep in mind we on call residents were there for at least 24 hours in a row, if not longer (my record was 56 hours in a row in Mr. Hospital). While typical night shift workers were there for their 8 hour shift. Anyway, the cafeteria just threw out the leftovers rather than sell them to us residents after that.
Another hospital we rotated through used to serve a 2 am meal free to all staff working at that time. Those burgers were extra good too.
Sometimes distressed food for distressed staff is the tastiest.
That’s the one I used to go to. It was probably closed for months before I noticed. I thought RR might have left the northeast altogether, but (if google maps is to be believed) there are others around here still open. I wonder why that particular location didn’t catch on.
Sort of a variant on, “Hunger is the best sauce.”
The garlic bacon cheeseburger at Burger King is the best burger I’ve had to date. I raved about it to a semi-vegetarian health-smoothie-seitan-organic yogurt friend, and she called me and said she got one and agreed it was out of this world. The bacon is real bacon, and the crunchy garlic bits send it over the top.
…which brings me to a question, they will, of course, stop selling it…what kind of garlic chips can I buy, what brand, and where? (no, I don’t want to fry my own slices of garlic at home, surely there must be commercially made - Trader Joe’s? online?)
because i’m a cheapskate, “favorite” means it’s all about the value
I think Carl’s Jr actually makes a decent burger for a fast food chain but I try not to go without a coupon because it’s stupid expensive for a drive thru joint
I like Five Guys but even a little burg and a small fries is CHA CHING
Habit Burger isn’t much different from Five Guys and it’s a lot cheaper around here. I prefer the cajun fries at Five Guys over Habit’s fries (although Habit does have sweet potato fries… so complicated!)
I’ve never understood the appeal of In’n’Out. Just tastes like any ol hamburger with pretty subpar fries to me. Like, there’s nothing wrong with it, but I have no explanation for the line at the drive thru that is consistently 10+ cars deep
Love me some Culver’s, and for more than just burgers; their Cod Dinner is quite good as well.
But yeah, they’re a smaller regional chain, so no love from the coasties.
You people in the Mid-West eat weird shit.
Almost put me off my lengua taco.
Tommy’s isn’t “long gone”. They’ve even got locations in Vegas and San Diego now.
