Double Ramen plus a can of tuna makes a meal for two for less than $1. And shrimp ramen is the ultimate. (Maruchan is, IMHO, the only brand worth buying - there IS a great deal of difference in the taste/texture/etc among various brands.)

MST3K: Best lil’ puppet show on the planet.

I love Kraft Mac and Cheese. I can’t eat the store brands, though. $.67 still ain’t bad.

People always make fun of me when I eat it. But I could eat it every day. Thanks to all of you who have validated my weird eating habits. I thought I was alone.

Other faves: PB & J, Chef Boy-ar-dee anything, grilled cheese, Lipton noodles or rice, pretty much anything that comes in a box or can and takes less than 15 minutes to make.

Spaghetti with butter, ketchup, and parmesan cheese. Egg noodles cooked and drained, tossed with shredded cabbage sauteed in butter. Season to taste, For some reason I could eat my weight of this stuff. Italian bread, toasted, with honey or peanut butter. Excuse me, I’m getting hungry, gotta go…

Since when is Chicken Kiev cheap?

For me, beans and rice is the best cheap food. I also like the eternally popular mac and cheese.

I think the kind I see in Brooklyn is made by Ichiban. The “Regular Flavor” is a miso-based broth…they also do beef, chicken, and shrimp, of which only the last is not yucky. And a slightly more expensive kind with even more miso that includes a wafer of bean cake that swells up like one of those cool sponges when you immerse it in the boiling water.

Supposedly it’s the most popular brand of cheap instant noodle in Japan. All I know is that the Asian shopkeepers nod approvingly when I buy it.

Working as I am on my sixth year of higher education, cheap eating is a subject near and dear to me.

If you’re willing to put a little elbow grease into it, you can make your own damn pizzas for less than what the frozen ones cost. Buy the packages of crust on sale at 3 for a dollar, some Cheap Ass brand pepperoni, store brand mozzarella in a bag, a jar of Prego, and whatever else you like. (My suggestions–red onions and those hot yellow peppers in a jar. Fresh garlic, if I’m in the mood. Mmmmm.) I once figured these pizzas were costing me about $1.50 each–more than the $0.99 Totino’s, but at least 51 cents better.

Another staple–Lipton Rice 'n’Sauce. 75 cents a package on sale, one of which with plenty of crackers provided many a meal for my roommate and I. We also devised endless incarnations of additives–the best, by far, is the Cajun Rice with Beans added to a can of salmon, sauteed with lemon juice and plenty of cajun seasoning.

Count me in on the Ramen club. I like them with double the seasoning package (mmmm…MSG), added to some stir-fried carrots and frozen broccoli.

The funny thing was that I was never willing to compromise on certain food items. The irony of this struck me one day when I was adorning a seasonless package of Ramen (due to the above practice) with a $15 bottle of extra-virgin olive oil.

A lot of good answers here. I like a lot of them, and eat them myself. My fav’s would be:

Ramen noodles

tuna fish sandwiches and/or casseroles

mac n cheese, but I make mine from scratch, using whatever noodles I feel like or have in the cupboard and velveeta, much better than boxed powder stuff.

beans and rice

fish sticks and tater tots

tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches

spaghetti,with or without sauce

pesto pasta salad, I buy the seasoning packet, add some fresh veggies, and the oil and vinegar, and presto! a large, simple, cheap salad

there are more, but that’s enough for now.

You’re not the only one that only eats bread sometimes. I do that all the time too. Sometimes just bread, sometimes toast, sometimes pseudo-grilled-cheese sandwiches (toast sandwich with slice of American cheese in microwave for 30 seconds).

More like Cha-puke-as.
