my dad told me to go grocery shopping today, and being the mischievous kid i am, i added a few things to the cart that weren’t on the list, including 4 cups of ramen noodles!
i realized today that i was deprived of the noodles as a child. my parents never bought ramen noodles, and i don’t think i had ever eaten ramen noodles prior to college. i do love them, they’re quite yummy.
now why would my parents deprive me of such a vital necessity? i talked to my grandmother today and she said my grandfather loved ramen noodles and she still has a huge box of them. this afternoon my dad confessed that he likes them too. therefore, my mom must be to blame. she must be an anti-ramen-noodleist. i wonder how she’ll react to the new specimens in the pantry when she returns tomorrow. i must convert my younger sister to a ramen noodle fan at once! we will fight for our right to eat ramen noodles and be happy!
eh… sorry, i didn’t get much sleep last night and i’ve listened to the same song at least 5 times in a row, so i’m in a crazed mood…
Never had them before I realized the value of money. Never had them since. Add a bunch of spices from the parent’s spice rack and they are. . . .edible. enjoy the crazed mood and the ramen noodles, i guess. . . .
Hmm…I have two packages of ramen noodles sitting upstairs. I haven’t dragged up the nerve (err…actually, the patience) to cook them yet. Never had them before.
Patience, JessEnigma? It takes like three minutes longer than the time it takes to boil water. But hey - some people are in a hurry, I guess.
I love ramen noodles; I used to live off ramen, water, and peanut butter sandwiches made with bread my sister brought home from her job a few years ago. We were so broke and ramen noodles helped nourish me. God bless you, Mr. Ramen Noodle Inventor. (sounds like one of those Budweiser “Real Men of Genius” radio commercials:D)
I think I’ll go make some right now. Now … chicken, or shrimp flavored? Hmm…
Well, you know, boiling the water would involve hunting down a pot, probably washing it (in this house, anyway), and then waiting for the water to boil. I’m too impatient for that! And that’s what I starved today because I was too lazy to go upstairs and cook the ramen noodles sitting in the kitchen.
I would go make some now, as I have nothing better to do…but it’s 2 AM and my mother does tend to frown on cooking at such hours.
We recently got a recipe for a cabbage salad/slaw that incorporates crumbled uncooked Ramen and toasted almond slivers. Mmm-mmm good! Quick to make and goes great at cookouts. I’ll ost it if anyone is interested.
I love them so much, although I never had them when I was a kid. But they are loaded with fat and sodium and did you know that each packet contains TWO servings? So, I don’t eat them much anymore.
A can of Campbell’s soup is two servings two, and that’s just as much a fiction.
And yeah, they are high in fat, at least more than you would think. And because of that, they’re not nearly as healthy as almost any other soup. But if it’s dinner, it’s not bad compared to some of the alternatives. I mean, it’s not supreme-pizza level high in fat.
Campbell’s used to make a baked version of ramen noodles. I loved those because I love ramen but I hate the added fat and calories they have from being fried in palm oil. I’d love to track down a good brand of baked ramen.
“anti-ramen-noodleist”–hee!
I love the Sapporo Ichiban chicken flavor ramen. When I go back to Hawaii this summer, I’ll get to have real ramen, in big hot bowls with gigantic spoons and char siu on top!
I know everyone hates me now . . .
Er, um, Jess … you know I was just joking with you, right? I hope you don’t think I was trying to be rude or anything.
So here’s a question for the ramen fans out there. I’ve noticed that on the package it says to make it as a soup; I have never done that. I generally just drain the noodles and eat them on their own. Does anyone else do this? Is this more common than the soup method? I have a friend who would never eat the noodles my way, and many heated debates ensued. (yes, you’re right - we have no lives.)
Dirty Earthworm I eat them the same way you do, unless I have a cold, then I want the broth. I’d never even heard of Ramen noodles before High School. Sadly I can’t eat them often, the sodium and High BP don’t mix well, so I’m told.
Another college student who has lived off Ramen noodles checking in.
Back in high school, I used to just eat the noodles with maybe a 1/3 of the spice packet sprinkled over them, but now I make the broth (it feels more filling).
I know a guy who will eat them uncooked. He pulls the wafer of noodles out of the bag, sprinkles some of the spice packet on them, and starts chowing down. Sounds like the solution to your problem, JessEnigma.
I can’t stand the Nissen Cup-O-Noodle ramen, though – and I love their “dump in a pot of boiling water” stuff. The taste always struck me as off; maybe it’s the dehydrated vegetables they keep inside the cup?
Ah, ramen noodles! I currently have twelve packages in my cupboard, and might have one for lunch. (I gave at least eight packages to someone I know last week) When I was younger, I used to dump the powdered broth into a mug, add some water from the water boiler, and have myself a nice little warm soup. (the moodles, I’d eat raw… no waste) My parents used to tell me not to do that, as it was bad for my brain. (???)
I like the new spicy chicken flavor that Mr. Noodles has come out with. Then again, there’s also the Mr. Skinny kind that I’ve been noticing recently… has less fat, I think. Haven’t tried it yet, though.
Now, should I have chicken, beef, shrimp, vegetable, or oriental flavor? (yes, Dirty, I have more options than you… chalk it up to eating these all my life :p)
easy e and JessEnigma:Mamee Noodles has come out with ramen noodles that don’t require any cooking. Picture these mini-ramen noodle packages (10 of them to a package), with spice already on the noodle wafers… you can add more if you like. (thanks to mini-packages of flavored powder) I’ve seen them in chicken and BBQ flavors. (look for a big yellow package with a blue monster on it)
