ramen noodles!

I finally got around to fixing that pack of noodles (boiled in a pot on the stove…took all of about 5 minutes…how on earth could you eat it uncooked?). Yummy. I will have to have some again tomorrow.

Reminded me of the packs of flavored rice I like…only with noodles.

Those were really, really gross.

Give me regular fatty ramen. YUM!

I used ramen noodles to make Cantonese chow mein.

Boil noodles until done. Drain and rinse. Heat large skillet, then add oil. Dump noodles into skillet and spread out to make a “noodle pancake.” Don’t worry about burnt bits. Once the bottom seems to have come together, carefully flip and cook top until crispy. Remove to large serving bowl.

Make Cantonese chow mein with whatever ingredients you want, but with extra sauce. Use oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, whatever. Once done, dump over the noodle pancake. The sauce will re-soften the noodles but leave just enough crispy bits.

Nummers!

Also-fill a small frying pan with just a teensy bit of oil, and crumble up uncooked ramen noodles in the pan. Cook until SLIGHTLY browned-just for less than a minute, those things burn fast.

Then put them on top of your salad!

Yum. I was brought up on ramen. My family buys Sapporo Ichiban by the carton. I actually like the broth, although I think the instructions tell you to add too much water. It should be powerful stuff, not weak and sissy. I also eat the noodles raw.
My SO knew one guy who tried to live on Mr.Noodle for three months. I think he nearly died of malnutitrion.

What I do, is I pour the noodles into a strainer until there’s only a teeny bit of water left. THEN, I pour them back in, add the flavor packet, mix and blend, then I pour them back into the strainer. (OF course, it makes a horrible mess but that’s what water is for!)

I keep remembering the one summer when a friend and I would have Oodles of Noodles for lunch every single day, along with margarine sandwiches with Wonder Bread. And we’d watch Nick Jr. We were about 12 at the time.

Once again a thread is started on a topic which I myself have seriously considered, in the last day, starting a thread on. Synchronicity.*

I just discovered Ramen noodles, Nissen Top Ramen in the package (== Oodles of Noodles). Of course there are lots of serious Ramen folk who won’t go near the instant stuff, which they say is not even worthy of the name. (The Asian girls at work make a lot of fun of my instant “ramen”, let me tell you.) No matter; to me the great thing is the convenience. I don’t even understand why people bother with dressing it up with, say, slices of chicken. For goodness’ sake, if I’m going to go to the trouble of cooking chicken, I’m not going to be having ramen with it, that’s for sure.

I have weird appetite difficulties with the first meal of the day, probably because I chug coffee and smoke cigarettes constantly. I’ve found that ramen is just what I want for lunch (breakfast for me, really). It’s so gentle and tasty and comforting.

Not to mention its price. Wow. I was a spoiled rich brat in college, so I never ate it then. Now I’m an impoverished underemployed liberal-arts type, so it really comes in handy. As far as fat and sodium, it beats the shit out of Wendy’s and McDonald’s, ramen’s chief rivals in convenience. (I do ramen in the microwave in a big Pyrex measuring cup. Cook-serve-eat, only one thing to wash.)

*Come to think of it, the last time this happened the topic was also Japanese in nature - Japanese baths to be specific. Japan…hot water…ramen…japan…hot water… I’m creeped out now.

That sounds great, Guin! Hm. I’m hungry…

I’ll second that, Guin. Somehow, the Campbell’s baked ramen (I don’t know if this is true of other brands, though) always tasted like they were raw…not like underdone pasta, rather like fresh-out-of-the-pasta-maker-and-directly-onto-your-plate-with-no-cooking raw. Ick, ick, ick.

Ramen lover here! My g/f hates it… in fact, I can really only make it when she’s not around. (Not that she would stop me, but she complains about the smell)

On camping trips, I used to take packets of Ramen, open up one side, pour in the flavor packet, crush/mix the bag and enjoy. Crunchy flavored ramen.

I usually boil the noodles, then when the noodles are nice and ready, I put in an egg (if I’m making two bags, two eggs. ). If I’m really good and fast, I can break the egg all up before its even cooked. Once the yolk is cooked, I drain it all and as though it weren’t fattening enough add the flavor packets… and BUTTER! and mix it all up. (Butter is optional… but I feel it adds a certain something.)

I never knew there were so many options. As far as I can tell, we have Nissen’s Ramen and “Manchurian” Ramen. No, Mr. Noodle or Sapporo or anything like that! Manchurian is usually way cheaper, and frankly-- Ramen is Ramen at that point. (By way cheaper I mean… its usually either 8/$1.00 for Nissen or 10/$1.00 for Manchurian)

What exactly is the “real” ramen? If it’s the handstretched noodles, then it’s definitely way different. Anyone know?

Hmm. I guess I’m a freak. I really and truly enjoyed them.

I like this bit:

check this thread for more info on ramen exotica (including those yummy indonesian ramen noodles with the chili oil and bumbu sauce!)

No, I sorta liked them too, but I couldn’t eat them right out of the pacakge. Campbell’s baked ramen needed to be boiled first or they tasted weird. Granted, they still tasted a bit weird even after cooking compared to regular ramen.

Actually I just put the noodles in the water til it boiils … drain the water and add the flavor packet to the noodles mix and eat

This used to be on the back on the package as a “flavorful” option

Now I’m always told that that is the unhealthful way to eat them since whats all in the flavoring … Whos correct ?

Also Cecil did have a column on ramen recently like the history and all

Now here in So cal We have diffrent brands of varying quality But the two I buy is manchuran and nissan as they have the most flavors

I also have a nice accident story when I was cooking ramen …

The flavoring packet contains the nasty sodium. The noodles themselves contain the nasty fat (they are lightly deep-fried to hold them in the package shape).

Ramen noodles are the secret to living beyond your means.
Can’t afford that Playstation 2? Eat ramen noodles for a couple of meals a week for a month, you’d be amazed how much you can save in grocery money.

ramen with soup.

you can jazz it up in so many ways.

add a beaten egg to the boiling water in dollups to make egg drop soup.

add nappa cabbage to it as it cooks.
or cilantro.
or basil.
or thin sliced carrots.
or peas.
or any veggie.
or all.

with kimchee (a treat I must only eat when mr baboon is away)

but my all time favorite?

lots and lots of lime juice.
(but then that’s usually how I cook. I am the only one I know of who goes through bags of limes).
no lime juice? No ramen for me.
