So what’s your favorite civilization on Civ 6? Mine is Alexander because of the tech and civics boosts you get when you capture a city.
Romans. Trajan’s Empire is awash in cash, and gets its very excellent special unit, the Legion, just in time to swat down everyone around it, if you beeline the mining of iron. Plus, Legions can repair damaged tile improvements built by builders (not an advertised ability, but probably related to the coding allowing them to build a fort). You can usually take an army with three legions and a siege tower, along with a couple archers, and take down almost any city up to the time of Medieval walls. Yum.
I’ve gotta go with the Romans. The instant trade routes and early special unit are just a murderous combo.
Civilizations with
A) Late-game bonuses, or
B) Bonuses that force you to apply a really specific strategy that might not work out on the map you’re on
… are invariably inferior to civs with early, general benefits. By the time your modern-era benefit or special unit kicks in, the Romans have a third of the world.
I’ve tried to find another civ with a similar early-game benefit combo, but so far, I’ve failed. I don’t like civs who get their special unit right off the bat (Egypt, IIRC, for example), because you’re not in contact with enough civs yet, and they haven’t developed enough cities for you. Are there any other good civs that get their special unit at about the same time as the Romans?
I generally play with a random civ, but it is hard to argue against Rome.
Japan is very strong. The samurai are very powerful and don’t lose combat strength from damage. The come out at a time when you’re economically capable of building and supporting a large army and can go do well against the next gen military unit (the musketman) The +1 adjacency bonus is strong for your economy. The electronics factory is a great special building. Their civ perk (combat bonus on shore and shallows) is decent in the early game but not amazing.
All in all, they have a pretty good to great everything and they get perks throughout the whole game. If they start off next to Rome, they’ll lose of course, but if they’re still alive when Rome’s legions become obsolete they can make a very quick rise.
I haven’t played enough to have strong opinions about which are “good” or “bad” civilizations but I liked Poland’s Winged Hussar unit which you get pretty early on and stays useful for a while.
Rome is certainly the best.
Roma Invicta!
I agree with the imbalance of certain civs with strong openings vs those with late game buffs. You’d think they’d have sorted that by now.
Lol, I meant to edit my post instead of quoting myself, sorry.
Nobody else likes Alexander?

I like the Holy Roman Empire. The Hansa district gets great adjacency bonuses and it’s cheap to build.
I don’t have any of the DLC Civs yet but I believe the top tier Civs are generally considered to be Rome (free monument and roads, early Legions), Scythia (horse rush), Sumeria (war-cart rush) and Macedon. Then you’ve got Germany, Australia, Kongo, Japan, etc. But if you’re talking MP, then domination is the usual path.
Macedon, Persia and Kongo both get their unique units at the same time as Rome (Iron Working), and Scythia’s unique unit comes in the same era.
I love Australia as well. The outback station is really nice as it can be built on snow (although this is map dependent but the RNG loves to start me in the far north/south). The bonus from charming and breathtaking is amazing. If anybody declares war on you, you get a stellar buff to the point where one simply doesn’t declare war on Australia (unless you’re sure you can kill them). +3 housing on the coast is great.
one interesting thing is that they just released a true start earth location map and because there are three greek empires you can sometimes trap one of the other two’s settlers behind your city and then capture their settler when you’re ready.
Right. This thread settles it.
Definitely grabbing 6 next time Steam has it on sale.
It’s on a flash sale right now at Green Man Gaming for $34 after SUMMER2017 coupon code. they are 12 hour deals so no idea if it will still be on when you read this.
DLGamer has it for $36
Just in case you didn’t want to wait on Steam having a sale. Both places sell it as a Steam key (it only comes as a Steam game).
Steam has it on sale today
It’s on sale all weekend.
I bought it Friday but haven’t had a chance to play yet.
When you do, set the game up so that two of the AI opponents are Victoria of England, and Harald Hardrada of Norway. One of the best parts of the game is that each leader in the game has his/her own special tune, which starts out in the early part of the game as a simple version of the song, but which gets more and more updated/complex as the game progresses. Vicky’s is Scarborough Fair, and Harald’s is “Gjendines bådnlåt”, which, trust me, you want to hear!
You don’t get to hear the songs until you meet the leaders, but if you eliminate the leader, the song still shows up in that game’s playlist.
Already started my first game. Romans vs. random opponents, will be sure to get England and Norway next game if they don’t turn up in this one.
