The Proclaimers cover. Not as dark, but perhaps more mournful. Curious what different artists like to bring out of this one.

How about cover albums?
For example, I really enjoyed Petra Haden Sings: The Who Sell Out and Meet The Smithereens!
Marie Digby covering Chris Isaak’s Wicked Game.
The Cramps’ version of Shortnin’ Bread is typically great, but I think this 60’s version by The Readymen might be even wilder.
Angelique Kidjo covers Bob Marley’s Redemption song at her PBS Special
Angelique Kidjo “I Think Ur a Contra” - featuring Ezra Keonig
The Beach Boys and Lorrie Morgan - Don’t Worry Baby (1996)
Springsteen’s Jersey Girl has to be the cover song must identified with the singer/songwriter who did NOT write it.
There are a LOT of those.
My poker gang trades USB drives full of music. We’ve gone through many themes (Drugs, Dogs, Duets…) but one was “Surprising Cover Songs”. The biggest surprises were songs that everyone assumed were originals, but were secretly covers.
Let’s see… “Me & Bobby McGee” was originally a pretty average country ballad by the otherwise entertaining Roger Miller, years before Kristofferson (the author) or Janis Joplin.
And we had a whole pile of light rock hits that were all originally done by Jules Shear: everyone thinks “All Through the Night” is a Cyndi Lauper creation, as well as The Bangles’ hit “If She Knew What She Wants”. “If We Never Meet Again” (Roger McGuinn), and “Whispering Your Name” (Alison Moyet), too… the list goes on. Oh, and Johnny Rivers is identified with Shear’s sappy “Slow Dancing”.
We’ve all heard a number of examples (even “My Way” isn’t a Sinatra. It’s a French song first performed by Claude François before it was re-written by Paul Anka).
And let’s not forget IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII will always love YYYYYYYYYYYOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUU.
Which reminds me of “I Love You,” as done by People. They cranked up a Zombies song and the result probably could hypnotize a mushroom.
Humble Pie No Money Down.
“Twist And Shout” Beatles, covering the Isley Brothers cover of the original by I forget who.
Yes!!
Elvis Costello’s “(What’s So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding” has to be at least in contention.
PTV covering Pink Floyd’s “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun”
Antony & the Johnsons covering Bob Dylan’s “Knocking on Heaven’s Door”
Maybe “Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season)” by The Byrds, a song originally written by Bob Seeger and with lyrics mostly from the 10th century BC.
Rod Stewart’s covers of Elton John’s “Country Comfort” and the Temptations ’ “(I Know) I’m Losing You”
Arrrggghhhh! Pete. Pete Seeger. Not Bob Seeger. (No relation, that I know of.)
Yeah, brainfart. This is how I feel right now. ![]()
Also, I don’t mean to correct you, but it’s Bob Seger, not Seeger. Pete Seeger was Seeger, not Seger. It’s easy to confuse them both. ![]()
