Favorite Cover Songs

Why, yes, I do have more:

“All Along the Watch Tower”–Jimi Hendrix
“Little Doll” Spacemen 3
“Henry Lee”-Nick Cave w/PJ Harvey
“Silver Dagger”-Dolly Parton
“Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door”-Guns’N’Roses
“Carmelita”-GG Allin
“Kill Me/ Ce Soir”-Iron Maiden
“In The Pines”-Nirvana
“Castin’ My Spell On You”-Johnny Kidd and the Pirates
“Let’s Lynch The Landlord”-L7
“Secret Agent Man”-Devo.

Isn’t the front side just a take on this Kraftwerk cover? Is this the favorite cover covers thread? :dubious:

Anybody mention the Grateful Dead cover of “Hard to Handle,” Los Angeles, August 1971 yet? Stellar vocal from Pigpen and one of Jerry’s greatest guitar solos ever.

It really is awesome.

Kids have GOT to listen to the same album over and over (and over and over…). Stay Awake and the Sesame Street In Harmony album kept us sane on long trips.

The perfect “Center of the Venn Diagram” of kids’ and grownups’ tastes (like “Jelly Man Kelly” by James Taylor, and Bette Midler’s “Blueberry Pie”).

From the alt-country side of the tracks, Lambchop’s This Corrosion has a battered and hard-won optimism to it. Sturgill Simpson’s In Bloom is in a similar vein, and The Civil Wars’ Disarm has a delicate beauty all its own. And Black Box Recorder’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide isn’t alt-country, but it is heartbreakingly lovely.

Recently had this same discussion elsewhere…heh…so I’ll just c&p my responses from that one…

William Shatner - Common People
Johnny Cash - Hurt
Mike Flowers Pops - Wonderwall, Velvet Underground Medley (a medley of Venus in Furs, White Light/White Heat and All Tomorrow’s Parties) (A Groovy Place is a great album in general, but those two are the best.)
Ghost - Here Comes the Sun, Missionary Man
Halestorm - Bad Romance, Get Lucky

I prefer the Young Gods version

I prefer the This Mortal Coil version (RIP Caroline Crawley)

Oh, thanks so much for this!

Sonic Youth turn The Carpenters’ Superstar into the saddest thing you’ve ever heard; Shonen Knife make Top of the World the happiest. Yeah, I’ve still got my copy of If I Were a Carpenter.

Telex: “Rock Around the Clock”

Peter Baumann: “Strangers in the Night”

Human League: “You’be Lost that Loving Feeling”

And an awesome take, at that. Really? People here don’t know their Kraftwerk? I needed to explain that? Just kidding - I should’ve mentioned that. However, yeah - great idea of a favourite cover covers thread (thank-you!), to whit:

AxCx provide a fine Oi rendition here of the Bee Gees’ Stayin Alive, and, yes, with Seth Puttnam providing a fine likeness of Barry (or Andy or whoever he was trying to faithfully emulate, by the looks of things).

Veering back to the non-cover covers topic, powerhouse German hardcore band Morser do justice to Carcass’s “Genreal Jigsore Quandary”. (no link at present)

Al Green - “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” (The Bee Gees)

Cowboy Junkies - “Ooh Las Vegas” (Gram Parsons)

The Isley Brothers - “Summer Breeze” (Seals & Crofts)

I forgot Turin Brakes’ haunting, powerful deconstruction of Chim Chim Cheree from Mary Poppins. The video is exceptional too.

Opeth’s cover of Robin Trower’s Bridge of Sighs.

But Wait! There’s More!

Nouvelle Vague I Just Can’t Get Enough (mmm, vibro-slap) - Turns out I like Depeche Mode songs, just not Depeche Mode doing them. If you like covers, check out Nouvelle Vague. They do only covers, and some of the best, with the singers not having heard the originals. Here’s them doing A Forest.

The Geraldine Fibber’s cover of Can’s You Doo Right does the original justice in a mere 5 minutes, 20 seconds. Mmmmm Nels Cline. mmmmmm, Carla Bozulich. Both just cutting loose. Gorgeous.

X - “Breathless” (best known as a Jerry Lee Lewis song)

X - “Soul Kitchen” (The Doors)

X - "Dancing with Tears in my Eyes" (written in 1930 by Al Dubin & Joe Burke, performed by many, including Leadbelly)

I’ve never much cared for Tom Petty, but his live cover of the Dave Clark Five’s “Any Way You Want It” is awesome.

Just now diggin some Holst’s “Planets”, and all of a sudden I’m like - WHOA! Hold the phone!
In the Jupiter bit - this and this melodically melds not too badly with this from Frank Zappa’s “Peaches En Regalia”.
And makes sense, considering FZ was into all that stuff, especially Edgar Varese.
