I don’t know “Disturbed” or “The Sickness” but could this actually be “Shout” by Otis Redding, later covered by Otis Day & The Knights of Animal House fame?
I should probably be more consistant with quotes and italics in regards to bands and songs, huh?
Gatsby- The version of Shout that disturbed covered was the one done back in the '80’s by Tears for Fears. Great Cover, Tequila
Type O Negative has done a lot of covers, mostly of old 70’s and 60’s type music. Good stuff.
My anti-cover? Easily The Cardigans remake of Iron Man… blech!
R.E.M. has done a great version of Richard Thompson’s “Wall of Death” and of Leonard Cohen’s “First We Take Manhattan.”
The Who’s Saterday nights Alright (For Fighting)
Thanks Tris…
Actually Gatsby I wasn’t aware Otis wrote “Shout” I was under the impression it was the Isley Bros.
checking Animal House soundtrack hmm they credit the Isley Bros as well(Ronald Isley-Rudolph Islkey-O’Kelly Isley)… great song though.
Oopsies, forgot to mention the “Shout” I mentioned the first time was indeed the Tears For Fears song.
leans up and kisses Tris
Bill Frisell: Chain of Fools
Shades Apart: Tainted Love
Danny Gatton: The Simpsons Theme
David Lee Roth: That’s Life
X: Breathless (my favorite cover in this list)
The remake of TLC’s"Creep" by Afghan Whigs–
The whole Annie Lennox-Medusa Album.
I second “Kiss” by Tom Jones. Without a doubt my favorite bit of that song is the ad libbed line “I think I better dance now” towards the end. So F’g cool
Awesome cover song! I also Second the nomination of anything by the me first and the gimmie gimmies.
I also would say
shudder to think: Crosstown Traffic
Weezer: Velouria
and
ramones: spiderman
Winterlong (Neil Young) by the Pixies
Whiter Shade of Pale by Annie Lennox
Highway to Hell (AC/DC) by Vopli Vidoplyasova - not really a cover, since they change the words and sing in Ukranian (Halya Prihod is the new name), but it just works so well as an accordian-folk-punk song…
Little Wing - Concrete Blonde
Everlasting Love - U2
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley
Tainted Love - Soft Cell
Hazy Shade of Winter - Bangles
Baby One More Time - Travis
“Viva Las Vegas”: Dead Kennedys off of Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables. Fast, classic, and a few extra lyrics (“got coke up my nose to dry away the snot!”)make this an ironic winner.
“Bertha” Los Lobos off of a compilation of Dead covers.
Toots and the Maytals doing “Country Road” (West Jamaica!)
Patty Smith “Gloria” off of Horses.
Thanks, y’all, for all the awesome suggestions. This is going to be a great mix CD.
Ooh! I just remembered another one: Mike Flowers Pops cover of “Wonderwall.” It came out just a few months after the Oasis album, and they remade the song like some lounge act. Very, very funny.
Definitely anything from’Greased’ by Less than Jake
and ‘Build me up, Buttercup’ by Save Ferris
also, ‘Barbie Girl’ by Homegrown
and Madness covering the British National Anthem…on a Kazoo. Pure Genius
oh oh oh… an Mxpx doing ‘Summer of 69’
and pretty much any ska cover ever is worth a try.
I would submit both The Pretenders’ and Annie Lennox’s versions of The Persuaders’ Thin Line Between Love and Hate.
Aretha is good for several: RESPECT is a cover of an Otis Redding song. Her Eleanor Rigby is fascinating. And of course, her version of Say a Little Prayer is my favorite.
On the one-hit-wonder side: a band called Frente did a nifty a capella version of New Order’s Bizarre Love Triangle.
Who did that hip-hop-ish version of Killing Me Softly a couple of years back? Really liked that one.
I’d have to add (God help me) White Zombie’s cover of ‘Boogieman’, second the nomination for the Bangles’ ‘Hazy Shade of Winter’, and basically anything by Save Ferris (especially their redux of ‘Come on Eileen’.
BTW, xtnjohnson, the remake of ‘Killing Me Softly’ was by the Fugees.
Duran Duran doing Led Zeppelin’s “Thank You”. Good shit, all things considered. LZ isn’t exactly an easy group to cover well!
I forgot Aimee Mann’s version of “One” from the Magnolia soundtrack.
Stoid:
I’ve never heard that version of “Wild Horses”, but the Samples did a really good version of it. Better than the Stones, IMO.
Pnuk Guy:
I was going to mention MxPx’s “Summer of '69” too. In fact, I really like every song on “On The Cover”.
Nicko:
I wasn’t aware that Concrete Blonde had covered “Little Wing”, but I’m a little biased. I don’t think any cover of that song can be as good as the one Stevie Ray Vaughan did.
Others I recommend:
Ned’s Atomic Dustbin: “Saturday Night” previously by the Bay City Rollers (S-A-TUR-DAY-NIGHT!)
And of course, “Hit Me Baby One More Time” redone by Dweezil Zappa, previously by Britney Spears. MUCH better than the original.
