Sarah McLachlan doing XTC’s “Dear God” was stunning.
Bauhaus - “Ziggy Stardust”.
Metallica (I think) doing Queen’s “Stone Cold Crazy” - that was kinda fun.
Speaking of covers, I heard some guy with a guitar do a beautiful cover of “Blinded me with Science” – does anyone have a clue who that was?
is this the same one as Cold Chisle did?
Ben Folds Five–Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head, She Don’t Use Jelly
R.E.M.–First We Take Manhattan (I second that)
Superman
Everclear–The Boys Are Back In Town
Can’t forget the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground”–makes me shake my long hair!
And a second vote for Frente’s version of “Bizarre Love Triangle”–I actually like it better than the original.
Also, Depeche Mode once did an awesome version of “Route 66”.
Finally, Chris Izaak (I think) singing Hank Williams’s “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry”.
I love covers. Prepare yourself. In no particular order: [ul]
[li]Social D – Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash)[/li][li]Any Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies[/li][li]Bran Van 3000 – Cum on Feel the Noise[/li]Everclear – Brown Eyed Girl (off Songs from an American Movie 1)
[li]Guster goes at least two or three covers per show. If you’re Napstering it, do Guster and Cover as the song title. Good stuff.[/li][li]Goldfinger – 99 Red Balloons. (they do one verse in perfect German. Made me wish they just did the whole song auf Deutsch.)[/li][li]Yea, Cake’s I Will Survive rocks, even more so considering that they really respect the song. They’re not mocking disco, they covered it because they LIKE it. Love em.[/li][li]Cartman’s cover of Come Sail Away is a hoot if you want a comedic element. Ah, Styx.[/li][li]Lemonheads-- Mrs. Robinson[/li][li]Presidents of the United States of America – Video Killed the Radio Star[/ul][/li]
Dammit, I know there are more. I just finished a cover mix tape myself I’ll think about it.
I do love a good cover…
Johnny Cash on American III: Solitary Man doing:
1)Solitary Man- Neil Diamond
2) One- U2
3) The Mercy Seat- Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (I think)
Iz-(dead Hawaiian singer) doing Country Roads
Stevie Ray Vaughn- Little Wing (Jimi Hendrix)
big_yellow_kingswood:
I downloaded the Cold Chisel song, and it’s definitely not the same one.

Did you know that the Quiet Riot song was actually a cover of a band called Slade?

7Seconds also did a cool cover of this.
And I forgot to mention the Circle Jerks’ version of “Fortunate Son” from Creedence Clearwater Revival(Yes, I really like Punk covers of regular songs. Sue me!)
Love both of those. Video… is actually the only song I like from the Presidents of the USA.
Also, for some comic relief, napster some songs from Richard [sub][what do his friends call him?][/sub] Cheese, off the album “Lounge Against the Machine”. It’s really sucky lounge singer (you’re a wonderful crowd! Let me introduce the piano player…) covers of a bunch of crunchy rock songs: Only happy when it rains, Rape me, Nookie, Smack my bitch up, and so on. Funny as hell.
And any cover by the Ramones is good too.
I LOVE that cover!
Don’t forget the Talking Heads cover of Take Me To The River.
good evening friends
covers:
rockapella: long cool woman in a black dress
annie lennox: whiter shade of pale
the bangles: hazy shade of winter
anti-covers:
i am not sure of two “artists” but i once heard a triple set on a country station. first cut was a country cover of eric clapton’s wonderful tonight, the second cut was faith hill’s horrifying rendition of piece of my heart, and the third cut was a country cover of i don’t want to miss a thing. talk about you basic cultural strip mining…
Rod Stewart: You Send Me
Dave Mason: All Along the Watchtower
Patty Smith: Many
Van Halen: Pretty Woman Where Have All the Good Times Gone?, You Really Got Me
13th Floor Elevators: Baby Blue
Extreme Heat: Come Together

Pretty good, but I think I’d go with The Bobs for this one, too.
And add Liz Phair (with Material Issue) doing “The Tra La La Song” (from “The Banana Splits”). That woman can sing “Fleagle, Bingo, Drooper and Snork” and make it sound sexy.
Do self-covers count? The Brian Setzer Orchestra did an excellent ~8 minute version of Rock This Town, with a serious amount of hornage added. I also like the way he added the horns to Rumble in Brighton. The BSO also did a great cover of The House Is Rockin’.
Jeff Healey did a jammin’ instrumental of Communication Breakdown.
Gary Hoey has a number of good covers, inlcuding Linus and Lucy, Low Rider, and Hocus Pocus.
Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s version of Oh Well kicks major ass.
I love lots of guitar and horns; can you tell?
Husker Du’s cover of the Byrds’ “Eight Miles High”
Elvis Costello’s cover of Nick Lowe’s “(What’s So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love & Understanding?”
The Clash’s cover of Toots & the Maytals’ “Pressure Drop”, Junior Murvin’s “Police & Thieves”, or Booker T. & The MGs’ “Time Is Tight”
The Jam’s cover of the Kinks’ “David Watts”
I’ll second R.E.M.'s cover of Richard Thompson’s “Wall Of Death”
“SHe Blinded Me With Science” - someone asked about a soft-voiced man covering it? Try Bill Parsons.
stoid
(napster rocks mightily)
Oh, is this my subject…
I don’t have the Zappa one, but I do have versions of “…Baby” by Fountains Of Wayne and Travis.
As far as others, I’ve pulled nearly 50 from Napster–that’s all I look for. Among the best:
[ul][li]KMFDM: “Material Girl” and “Mysterious Ways”[/li][li]Soundgarden: “Girl U Want”[/li][li]PJ Harvey & Bjork: “Satisfaction” (live)[/li][li]Devo: “Head Like A Hole”[/li][li]DDT: “Vogue” (it’s industrial and it’s TERRIFIC)[/li][li]Liz Phair & Material Issue: “Turning Japanese”[/li][li]Phish: “Gin & Juice” (I’m no Phish fan, but they reimagined “G&J” as a bluegrass song and it’s hilarious)[/li][li]Type O Negative: “Summer Breeze”[/li][li]Limp Bizkit: “Faith”[/li][li]The Flaming Lips & Nick Cave: “What A Wonderful World” (live)[/li][li]Marilyn Manson: “Rock & Roll N*****” and “Suicide Is Painless”[/li][/ul]
And my absolute, total favorite:
[ul][li]Revolting Cocks: “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?”[/ul][/li]which will never stop cracking me up.
As for an anti-cover, I nominate the song “Torn”, originally by the band Ednaswap, popularized by (urgh) Natalie Imbruglia. The Ednaswap original has so much more passion.
[sub](Incidentally, if anyone is interested in acquiring any of these (or the others I didn’t name (I should be ashamed of putting a parenthetical in a parenthetical)), they’re all on MP3 and available for e-mailing. The address is in the profile.)[/sub]
I heard that one also. It was fantastic. I can’t for the life of me remember his name though, but he is from the Seattle music scene.
For some reason, the name Chris Chambers is coming to mind - WAG.
And two rockin’ covers I’ve yet to see mentioned are done by Pat Benetar:
“I Need a Lover (who won’t drive me crazy)”. Who’s song was this, originally? I’ve only heard the original once, and no, it wasn’t John Cougar Melancamp.
“Future’s so bright” done originally by Timbuk 3. It might be hard to find on disc, as I’ve only heard it on the soundtrack to one of Disney’s Goofy movies.
I should have finished reading the whole thread before replying. Stoid had the right name of the artist - Bill Parsons.
SwimmingRiddles, you weren’t lying about the Guster covers. I just did the proscribed search on Napster and came up with TONS. How cool! I love love love me some Guster.
Is this really KMFDM though? It’s kind of annoying finding songs on Napster…Everything funny is either Pig Vomit or Weird Al, all prank calls are Jerky Boys, everything that sounds British New Wavey is the Cure, and everything remotely industrial is KMFDM.
I haven’t heard Mysterious Ways, but the Material Girl cover does kind of sound like En Esch’s voice, though…after checking, sure enough, both of them are listed on the discography at the KMFDM/MDMFK FAQ! Nice. Now I have another download to do.
And another…
Thanks, you rock.
