Favorite covers

A confession: these two KMFDM ones are not actually things I pulled off Napster–I actually own the CDs they’re taken from and ripped them myself. And Joe, If you want me to e-mail these, just let me know.

Not to worry, got 'em.

I stumbled across two others in my collection that I forgot to mention: Infectious Grooves: The Immigrant Song (Led Zeppelin), and Fame (David Bowie)

Sara Evans (a country artist, but she’s pretty mild when it comes to twang) has 2 great covers on her new “Born to Fly” album: I Could Not Ask for More, originally sung by Edwin McCain, and even better, Every Little Kiss, originally by Bruce Hornsby. Her version of Every Little Kiss is SOOOO GOOD! She’s got a beautiful voice.

Other good 'uns are by Rockapella and The (Trench)Coats – the 'Coats have an awesome version of “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” that’s just hysterical.

Santana: She’s not there is in most ways better than the Zombies origional. Crowded house also do an amazing version.

Simon & Garfunkel covering the Everly Brothers Bye, Bye, Love. Saw them on tour that year at the University of Oregon. Did a nice set (though Artie apologized for having a cold) then encored with the Everly Brothers to a huge round of applause and whistling, etc. When the album came out, I actually thought they’d recorded at our concert until I read the liner notes. It was a great capper to the set.

A hearty third to Frijid Pink and House of the Rising Sun. I loved their heavy fuzz bass rendition, and the lead singer really threw himself into it. Wish they’d gone on to further success.

I know purists will shoot at me, but Blue Cheer and their version of Summertime Blues was a lot of fun when it came out.

Must have a lot of fellow a cappella fans out there. I’d like to add The Bobs rendition of Helter Skelter as well. It’s a hoot.

And while we’re on the subject, an endorsement for the a capella **BOCA - Best of College A Capella ** series. Great covers of everything from Anne Lennox to the Indigo Girls to Nirvana
And to {b]JoeCool ** I must be one of the only other people in the Western Hemisphere to know about Slade, a British proto-punk band who had a bent for “creative” spelling. I actually owned their album in the early 70’s. My favorite was “In Like a Shot From My Gun” which was a decent, if not terrible double entendre. (And sounded, with their accents, like “ma goon.”)

I just wanted to add in Orgy’s version of New Order’s “Blue Monday”; I love it!

Also, has anyone heard of a recent version of the song for the 80s TV show “Fraggle Rock”? I heard it once on a local radio station and can’t figure out who redid it.

I loved the entire (well half of anyway) tape by Metallica, The $5.98 Garage Days Re-Revisited. All covers of songs that influenced them.

Any cover by Type O Negative, Peter Steele has the coolest voice. So many times I find myself wondering what such and such a song would sound like if Type O redid it. Recently heard a version of them doing Britney Spears “Hit Me Baby One More Time”, nothing beats that for pure laughter value.

Marilyn Manson has a few good covers too, my favorites of which are “Sweet Dreams” originally done by the Eurythmics, and “Put A Spell On You”, originally done by CCR (I think).

Also like Anthrax’s covers of Black Sabbath songs.

Just remembered another one, Papa Oom Mow Mow as sung by the town of Freehold, New Jersey.

Well, I gotta second, or third, or whatever anything by Me First and the Gimmee Gimmee’s. From their first album of 70’s covers “Mandy” and “Rocketman” are great (and many others). From their second album of showtune covers there are a lot of great songs: “Science Fiction Double Feature”, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, and “These Are a Few of My Favourite Things.” Also, they just came out with a new album of 60’s covers (definitely check it out; songs like “Blowin’ In The Wind”, “Who Put The Bomp…”, “My Boyfriend’s Back,” and “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow”).
Less Than Jake’s Greased album is great, though a little hard to find. If you can find it, pick it up.
Also, check out their cover of “I Think I Love You” from the Scream 2 soundtrack; it’s really great!
Some other cool ones:
Goldfinger put out an EP of covers a little while back. It’s called Darren’s Coconut Ass with covers like “Just Like Heaven”, “Is She Really Going Out With Him?”, “Feel Like Making Love”, and “The Kids Are Alright”.
Also, there is a series of 80’s punk cover CD’s. Also, they’re on the Duran Duran Tribute Album, doing “Rio” (it also includes “Hold Back The Rain” by Buck-O-Nine, “Hungry Like The Wolf” by Reel Big Fish, and “The Reflex” by Less Than Jake
I can’t remember the names right now, but a slew of bands covered songs like “Turning Japanese” (No Use For A Name).
There’s some great Christmas covers out there too: “White Christmas” by Goldfinger and “Grandma Got Ran Over By A Reindeer” by Less Than Jake.
Another great cover is from Good Riddance’s second album. They cover “Come Dancing” (the album’s name is “Comprehensive Guide To Modern Rebellion”).
The Blue Cheer version of “Summertime Blues” is another one that comes to mind. Millencollin did a great cover of “Every Breath You Take”, Reel Big Fish did a great cover of “Take On Me” on the Baseketball soundtrack. Also, I think Smashmouth does “Why Can’t We Be Friends” on the same album.
Speaking of soundtrack’s, I really like the cover of “Ballroom Blitz” on the Wayne’s World soundtrack.

I know my last post was pretty dang long, but just thought I’d mention that the 80’s punk covers compilations are called Before You Were Punk.

Another vote for Frente’s Bizarre Love Triangle and Mike Flower’s Wonderwall.

Other personal faves…

kd lang - Crying
Michael Stipe - One
Tori Amos - Thank You
Sheryl Crow - D’yer Maker
U2 - Dancing Barefoot
Indigo Girls - Tangled Up In Blue
Hooverphonic - Shake the Disease
The Breeders - Happiness Is A Warm Gun

I just had to add another. It is Placebo’s cover of Depeche Mode’s “I Feel You”. I love that song soooo much.

Sorry I had to bump this, but hopefully newer posters can now say what covers they love.

Goldfinger also does “I love you more today than yesterday” and “rio,” both of which are really good.

Tool does a cover of Led Zeppelins “No Quarter” (my personal fav LZ song) which is amazing.

UB40 does “Fool Rush In,” which was originally a Elvis song, I think…

The Toadies do a cover of Talking Heads’ “I’m not in Love” which is really cool too.

Oh, there are so many good ones already on this thread, and so many more to choose from…

I nominate…
Stevie Ray Vaughn with Stevie Wonder’s “Superstitious”

Tears of a Clown - English Beat
Suspicisious Minds - Dwight Yoakam
Alison - Everything but the Girl
Somewhere Over the Rainbow - Nilsson
Man of Constant Sorrow - Soggy Bottom Boys

I thought kd Lang’s cover of Crying was a duet with Roy Orbison. Still a terrific song.

The Clash - Bobby Fuller Four’s I Fought the Law
ELO - Chuck Berry’s Roll Over Beethoven though it’s too long for most people’s taste.

Almost forgot, my homegirl Linda Ronstadt’s covers of Heat Wave and Warren Zevon’s Poor Poor Pitiful Me

Age of Chance cover Prince’s Kiss (before Tom Jones, way cooler)
Sepultura cover Motorhead’s Orgasmotron
Love Spit Love cover The Smiths How Soon is Now? (not blasphemy, it’s pretty good!)
Kevorkian Death Cycle cover Romeo Void’s Never Say Never
Hate Dept. cover Duran Duran’s Planet Earth
Here’s the linkfor the Newer Wave CD’s, before I start listing every track. I recommend both for jaded 80’s DJ’s.
À Grumh cover Pink Floyd’s Another Brick in The Wall Pt. II
Swans cover Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart (twice, but “red” cover is the one I like)
Doctor Kissinger’s Homemade Chocolate Penises cover DEVO’s Jerkin’ Back and Forth (try finding that one on napster, HA!)

I know I’ll think of more must-haves when I get home and go through my plates and CD’s. I’ll return and fill a page tomorrow.

Pet Shop Boys- “always on my mind” Elvis
Placebo- “Bigmouth Strikes Again” The Smiths
Shane Mcgowan and Nick Cave- “what a wonderful world” Louis Armstrong?

Anti cover Lenny Kravitz- “american woman” The Guess Who

Manfred Mann’s cover “Blinded by the Light”.

There’s a local acapella group called Da Vinci’s Notebook, I’ve heard some of their repertoire at an acapella festival and they occasionally perform on the radio. Samples of their work can be found at their website along with CDs for sale.
