favorite DVD extras

Ok, whilst at a friend’s house, last night, I saw this really silly music video on the Beyond Re-animator DVD called “Move Your Dead Bones”. Now, while that Euro-pop crack-dream had “ill-advised” written all over it, it was pretty damned amusing. So I was wondering what people’s favorite DVD extras were, as this might help me justify having spent that little bit of my life (which I can never get back) watching something so utterly mind-numbing.

Thanks!

I loved Robert Rodriguez’s “Ten-Minute Cooking School” feature on the Once Upon A Time In Mexico DVD, where director Rodriguez takes us into his personal kitchen and teaches us how to make puerco pibil, the slow-roasted pork dish that Johnny Depp’s character literally killed for in the movie. Rodriguez comes across as a really cool guy, gives some good ideas for cooking and entertaining (mainly aimed at guys my age), and makes it all seem fun and effortless.

On the disc for Sleepaway Camp II, there is a teaser trailer for the third movie. The trailer consists of the title logo and dripping blood … for about ten seconds. That’s it. That’s all there is. I find it so funny I watched it at least three times the first time I found it, and it’s become something of a rite of passage in my home. Whenever a new friend comes to visit, we build up the trailer to sound like this amazing thing that everyone must experience. Most of them are angry when we’re done.

I’m sure there’s others, but that’s the one that immediately springs to mind.

Oh, and the “Pinky’s Useless Facts” subtitles on Buckaroo Banzai.

Blast! Stolen thunder!

The opening credits to This Is Spinal Tap.

The extras from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

The director commentaries from any Farrelly brothers movie.

The THX test sequence from the Indiana Jones box set (and probably others).

I seem to be stalking Draelin today… ::stalk::

Yes, the Pinky Carruther’s Unknown Facts on *Buckaroo Banzai * has to be one of the best things ever. It makes the movie entirely different - much better, IMO.

I like any outtakes/deleted scenes/trivia in general… *Back to the Future * has an excellent Trivia Track.

The *Who Framed Roger Rabbit * double-disc had the three shorts produced with the characters, which I enjoyed very much.

On the DVD of the remake Willard, the music video for “Ben” was just… wow.

I love the erstatz cable channels on ‘Earth Girls Are Easy’.

The “subtitles for people who don’t like the film” on Monty Python and the Holy Grail. They’re subtitles that are made up entirely of Shakespeare quotes…but someone went to the trouble of actually matching up the dialogue onscreen to Shakespeare, so the subtitles are sort of vaguely similar to what’s being said. It ends up being absolutely hilarious.

By far, the coolest DVD extra I’ve seen is the music video on Hannibal.

“Wha-wha-WhA???” you say, “There’s a music video on Hannibal?!”

Indeed. It’s an original composition by a guy who worked on the movie, and the video is made up of “cutscenes” from the shoot (the little bit of tape between the time the director says “cut” and the time the camera actually shuts off. It’s VERY cool.

Another great thing on the Monty Python and the Holy Grail is the LEGO Camelot song.

On the Galaxy Quest DVD, there’s a Thermian audio track for one of the language selections. The Thermians were the good alien race in the movie, and talked in sort of a warbling screeching noise. The audio track runs for the entire movie, apparently done by different people, all “speaking” in Thermian.

I wouldn’t suggest watching the whole movie using that track, though.

Yet another funny thing on the Holy Grail DVD is the Coconut documentery.
