Favorite Harry Potter character?

I hadn’t really thought about it before this poll, but I had to vote for Severus Snape. As nasty and unforgiving as he was for most of the series, he had the strength of his convictions and did what needed to be done, and I admire that. I can’t even begin to imagine anyone other than Alan Rickman in that role now, either - perfect blend of actor and character.

Side note: Real-life Harry Potter reveals why sharing the wizard’s name has made his life a misery

In Portsmouth, England. About the same age as Daniel Radcliffe and even has an oddly similar scar, the less-than-magical result of walking into a lamppost. And he’s heard all the puns about his, er, wand.

I’ve taken that as a sign of just how soul-crushing Azkaban can be, especially if you’re more cowardly than evil (which is how I read the Malfoys). That place really took the vinegar out of him.

I don’t remember the books well enough to base my answer on those, but from the movies it was a tough decision for me between Bellatrix & Ginny. I really lose myself in those two. You just can’t watch Bellatrix and not get caught up in her insanity. But even though it seems like Ginny only gets like two or three lines per movie, they say a ton. For some reason I get the feeling she’s a Legilimens; which makes her a perfect match for Harry, who often just doesn’t like to “talk about it.”

Snape is certainly one of the deepest-rooted characters I’ve ever read.

I don’t have a dog in this fight but I’m surprised and interested that Luna Lovegood is so well liked by those with an opinion.

I thought the young actress played this part well and I read that J.K. Rowling thought her perfect for it, but while Luna is likeable I think of her as a background player not one of the “stars.” Underdog strong in the face of bullying? Odd-man-out? Heart of gold? Not-so-innocent abroad in the World? Something interesting is at work here.

This is why I chose Luna Lovegood. I always enjoy the scenes she is in. (speaking of book Luna Lovegood)
Fred and George are funny but sometimes a little too mean to their brother Ron.

After all the times I’ve read the books, I’ve never noticed that! I will try to pay more attention next time. Good observation!
Even though I like Luna so much, I have to admit that Hermione would make a better SDMB poster with her skeptical mind. If Luna showed up at this board to describe crumple-horned Snorkacks or wrackspurts I would have to support Hermione and tell her that she’s talking nonsense.

Ernie MacMillan - but only 'cause that’s my grandpa’s name.

I’m a Neville fan.

I like that Harry’s father was cast in the “possible bully” light. That gives us extra food for thought. I’m also surprised that given the elder Potter’s peer group’s animagus hard-on that Harry and co never followed suit with some were action of their own.

OTOH I think that Neville was not as well served in the films as he was in the books… especially given his “Harry or him” prophecy…

I like Harry Potter.

He’s the reason for the season.

BTW, check out the July 8/15 double issue of Entertainment Weekly, with the young Daniel Radcliffe c. 2001 on the cover. A lot of great behind-the-scenes stuff on the films, photos of props and sets, interviews with cast and crew, etc. I’m sure it’s not in the newsstands anymore, but you could find it at your local library. Definitely worth a look for any Potterphile.
