I think my favorite solo is the first one from Four Horsemen.
I heard an excellent classical guitar instrumental on the local rock station a couple days ago that was incredible, but, alas, they did not mention any name or artist.

“Instrumental bits: Guitar” doesn’t have to mean solo, right?
Lloyd Cole and The Commotions, * Forest Fire (extended mix) * has one of the most awesome jams (primarily guitar based) that has ever been recorded in the history of the universe.
God, it’s 2am and I’m dead on my feet and th eonly cool guitar I can think of is the opening to Hammer to Fall (Queen).
I know Brian May has to be mentioned here somewhere…
Maybe tomorrow.
Anything by Tom Petty.
Most Hendrix songs win, but I particularly like the intro and opening lead to ‘(Hey Baby) New Rising Sun’ and pretty much all of ‘One Rainy Wish’.
The songs I learned slide from also stick in my head. Clapton playing ‘Motherless Children’ off of 461 Ocean. Various Robert Johnson tunes.
David & David’s “Welcome to the Boomtown” has excellent guitar instrumental bits, IMHO.
After reading dpr’s mention of Brian May, I remembered a very obscure recording he did in the early eighties called “Star Fleet Project”–Brian May and Friends. It was a 3 song EP that featured, among others, Eddie Van Halen. It has some of the best rock and blues guitar ever. If anyone is interested in more info, get in touch; I just dug out the cassette, and it still sounds as good as ever.
