Favorite instrumental bits of songs: Guitar

Here’s a few of my favorite guitar bits (not necessarily the world’s greatest):

Electric lead solo:

  1. “Let It Rain” - Eric Clapton
  2. “My Sharona” - The Knack (LP version, not the edited radio version)
  3. “Back in the USSR” - The Beatles

Electric rhythm:

  1. “I Fought the Law” - Bobby Fuller Four
  2. “Burning Love” - Elvis Presley
  3. “Sufferagette City” - David Bowie

Acoustic rhythm:

  1. “Suffragette City” - David Bowie (one of his best tunes)
  2. “SOS” - ABBA (HEY! stop that snickering…)
  3. “Fire on High” - Electric Light Orchestra

Heartbreaker solo, Jimmie Page, Led Zepp
Crossroads Head Cuttin’, Steve Vai/Ry Cooder
Fairies wear boots, Black Sabbath
357 Blues, Robert Johnson

The alltime best has to be David Gilmore’s solo on “Comfortably Numb”. Both of them (Pink Floyd).

Lessee… Knopfler on “Brothers in Arms”. Or “Sultans of Swing” (Dire Straits).
Lifeson’s accoustic intro to “La Villa Strangiato” (Rush).
Slash’s intro to “Sweet Child o’ Mine” (GNR).

I could go on for hours. Maybe I will. Tomorrow

In no particular order: song - artist (guitarist)

Stranger than Kindness - Nick Cave (Blixa Bargeld)
T.V. Eye - The Stooges (Ron Asheton)
Alexander the Great - Iron Maiden (Dave Murray/Adrian Smith)
Sister Ray - The Velvet Underground (Lou Reed/Sterling Morrison)
Nervous Breakdown - Black Flag (Greg Ginn)
Hey, Hey, My, My (live) - Neil Young
Immortality - Pearl Jam (Mike McCready)
… and a bunch more.

As for aucustic (sp?) solos, I must go with:

“Hotel California” -The Eagles (the one at the end, not the beginning, though that’s good, too)

For electric:

(Not a solo, but damn it sounds good)
“The Other Side” -Red Hot Chili Peppers

These arn’t neccesarily my favourites, but they do kick ass.

[ul]
[li]“Someone I Care About” – The Modern Lovers (the dippy little solo in the bridge)[/li][li]“Starry Eyes” – The Records (intro and solo)[/li][li]“Girl of My Dreams” – Bram Tchaikovsky (intro)[/li][li]“Suspicious Minds” – Elvis Presley (throughout)[/li][li]“Mystery Dance” – Elvis Costello (solo)[/li][/ul]
And on my list of guitar bits I’d just as soon never hear again:[ul]
[li]“Going to California” – Led Zeppelin (the whole bloody thing, but especially the intro)[/li][li]“Roundabout” – Yes (the intro with the harmonics and hammer-on/pull-off stuff).[/li][li]“Freebird” – Lynryd Skynyrd (you’d think that in twenty-five minutes or whatever it is, at least one of the three guitars would do something interesting, but you’d be wrong).[/li][/ul]

Best Lead Guitar on a recording…Peter Frampton’s ‘Do you feel like we do?’ from Frampton Comes Alive.

“Linus and Lucy” as covered by Gary Hoey

Just about anything Stevie Ray Vaughan even considered playing…

“Before You Accuse Me” by Eric Clapton

“The Thrill Is Gone” by BB King

My all time favorite electric guitar pieces are the solos in “Highway Star” by Deep Purple. They may not be the best, but they sure as hell rock. On a related line, my all time favorite bass-as-lead guitar solo is the intro to “Shadows of the Night” by Darkheart.

COOL! Henry mentioned Alexander the Great. One of my faves, as it also has that wonderful Gong in it.

I’ve got two versions of the Vai/Cooder Crossroads solo. one is just the solo, the other seems to be the whole cut.

Yngwie Malmsteen doing Flamenco Diabolo. Acoustic Guitar, wonderful.

Dang, I could pull out whole CD’s.

Second Thin White Rope mention of the day. Their song “Disney Girl” off of their first release, Exploring The Axis. Dual feedback drenched guitars that put me in the mind of going blind from the burning desert sun. The followup song, “Soundtrack”, is pretty damn swell as well.

“On The Roof” by the Feelies has a lovely small solo in it. It’s on their release titled The Good Earth.

Almost anything by Opeth - more people should check out the talent in this Swedish band. Really great acoustical parts inter-woven with formidable heaviness.

Anything by Mark Knofler during his Dire Straits period.

Anyone thinking about starting a thread about worst guitar solos?
I submit for your approval “It’s a Mistake” by Men at Work

Jimmy Page’s solo on Donovan’s Hurdy Gurdy Man.

Is Southern Man the Neil Young song with the one-note solo? Not sure if it’s good, bad, or just amazing.

“rat tomago” Zappa

Fools, I’ll destroy you all!!

[li]Eric Johnson “The Cliffs of Dover”[/li]
[li]Joe Satriani “The Crush of Love” or[/li]
“Always With You Always With Me”

[li]John Renbourn “My Dear Boy”[/li]
Email me and I will send you song files of the above as proof.

WORST guitar solo? Tough one. Although I have to say the solo in the Golden Earrings “When the lady smiles” (solo by George Kooijmans, an otherwise above average guitarist) is the most half-assed and uninspired solo ever to disgrace an otherwise fine rock song.

I would have to say any of Slash’s solos on “Sweet Child o Mine” and “Knocking on Heavens Door” both G n R or the opening to “Voodoo Chile” by Hendrix.

BTW, I have a question, does anyone have a definitive answer. Is it Voodoo Child or Voodoo Chile? I have seen both on albums, but am not sure which is the right one.

I also like the solos on “One” by Metallica

those are the only ones I can think of right now cause it is late.

Rick

  1. Deep Purple - Sweet Child in Time
  2. Jimi Hendrix - almost anything from Electric Ladyland
  3. SRC - In the Hall of the Mountain King

My favorite guitar solo of all time would have to be Phil Collen’s solo in Def Leppard’s “Photograph.” The first four bars are sterling, and the rest is almost as good.
