Favorite Kevin Costner Movie

Another vote for ‘Mr. Brooks’. I always recommend it when KC comes up.

There are several there that, if they were on now, I would happily watch them…again. But two others ,in which I particularly like Costner’s role, are A Perfect World and The Upside of Anger.

Agreed, and because he is so understated in it that the ending is a surprise.

He’s one of those character actor who somehow fell into a leading man role even though he is completely milquetoast, and frequently miscast outside of sports movies and the occasional Western. He was up for roles as Batman, The Fugitive, and Rob Roy, and based on his Robinhood: Prince of Thieves performance it is good he never got any of them. He’s not a bad actor, but he is one who is good at underplaying a role rather than upstaging everyone else.

Was a toss-up between Bull Durham and Untouchables for me. I went with Bull Durham.

I went with not listed. Since the question is about my favorite movie of his, and not the one in which I think he gave his best performance, I have to go with Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Costner himself was just ok, but Alan Rickman did a great job, as did Morgan Freeman. I also liked Bryan Adams singing "Everything I Do*. I’m not a big fan of the other movies listed.

I liked Untouchables, in spite of Kevin Costner.
That is the kindest thing (cough …pretentious) I can say.

Oh…I’ll go with the staples…The Untouchables…and Bull Durham…both very good pictures, with good ensemble casts. Costner was right for each of those roles. KC just never made many of the kind of pictures I’d go out of my way to see.

Just like the KC Chiefs! (OK, cheap joke, apologies in advance, but could hardly resist).

Field of Dreams for me. Costner’s character grows and develops through it, meeting the challenges every step of the way; and though some are pretty outlandish (“You want me to plow my cornfield under and build a baseball field?”), he deals. His Ray Kinsella is definitely not a one-dimensional character, and Costner shepherds him along every step of the way.

That, plus James Earl Jones, Amy Madigan, and Ray Liotta make it my favourite Costner picture.

The real star of The Untouchables was Andy Garcia. Sean Connery, playing an Irish cop with a pronounced Scottish burr, was pure comedic relief.

Me too, and me too. Untouchables is the better movie, but Bull Durham has the better Costner performance.

Not necessarily the best or most entertaining, but I think A Perfect World utilizes his talents the best (such as they are). His normal lack of emotional range works very well for the character he plays.

That was what I was coming to mention.

If I were flicking through the channels (back in the day, when I used to do that), the movie that I’d be most likely to stop and watch would be The Untouchables.

Silverado holds the distinction of the first time that I can remember falling asleep during a movie. (Not that it was particularly bad, but I was tired.)

“Criminal”, a movie I just watched for a 2nd time a couple of nights ago. I loved watching how his damaged character, experiencing love for the first time, became a human being.

I third or fourth the Perfect World nomination. It’s the best film Costner has ever been in (as the lead anyway) and his best performance. Wildly underseen, underrated, overlooked. Terrific movie.

I’d say Bull Durham is his number two.

I was going to say The Bodyguard, but then realized that I actually liked it due to Whitney Houston’s performance. Then I also realized that she was actually just playing herself and not really perofrming.

I haven’t seen all of his works, but I’ve always loved No Way Out. I admit partly because I worked in the Pentagon eons ago and it was kinda neat seeing him run thru the halls. But I also remember being blown away by the ending.

Bull Durham was fun. Robin Hood sucked mightily.

I’m not much of a movie person but I really enjoyed A Perfect World.

Open Range followed by Dances with Wolves. DwW holds a special spot for me because it was my grandpa’s favorite movies. He loved it so much, he got it for me on VHS. I have never bought movies, so that was one of the few movies I owned so I would pop it in from time to time when I needed something soothing. Laying on the couch sick…put it in.

He was perfectly cast.
