‘Hello, hello, hello, how low?’ - Smells Like Teen Spirit
It sounds so ridiculously simplistic it encourages the mind to find a deeper, philosophical meaning to it. It also speaks volumes about generation-x and the state of the world today. All in three words
Sled dogs after dinner,
Close their eyes on
the howlin’ wastes.
Kurt Cobain reincarnated
Sighs and licks his face,
then they drift past strips
of Serengeti and the gates
of sleep hollow too.
When
I
was
driv-
ing
once
I
saw
this
paint-
ed
on a bridge:
‘I don’t want the world, I just want your half’
-They Might Be Giants, “Ana Ng”
(oh, and Featherlou, that’s “Message of Love” by the Pretenders, and to pick a nit, it actually says “we are, all of us, in the gutter…”. Great song, though.)
“When you were here the other day
Couldn’t look you in the eye
You’re just like an angel
Your skin makes me cry
You float like a feather
In a beautiful world
You’re so very special
I wish I was special…”
-Radiohead “Creep”
“How I wish, How I wish you were here
We’re just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl year after year
Running over the same old ground
And what have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here…”
Pink Floyd “Wish you were here”
“There’s no time to lose, I heard her say
Catch your dreams before they slip away
Dying all the time, lose your dreams
And you will lose your mind–ain’t life unkind?”
-Rolling Stones, “Ruby Tuesday”
“You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move, but I cannot hear what you say.”
–Pink Floyd, “Comfortably Numb”
“You may say that I am a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you will join us
And the world will live as one.”
–John Lennon, “Imagine”
Now for a “challenge”: These two sets of lyrics come from the same band and the same album.
“Adam and Eve live down the street from me
Babylon is every town…”
AND
“We spend all of our lives going out of our minds
Looking back to our birth, forward to our demise.”
"When I was just a baby,
My momma told me son,
Always be a good boy,
Don’t ever play with guns. But I shot a man in Reno
just to watch him die.
– Johnny Cash, “Folsom Prison Blues”
Other favorites:
“When you ain’t got nothing,
you’ve got nothing to lose”
– Bob Dylan, “Like a Rolling Stone”
“Uhh, hot milk, tweak my nipple”
– Beck, some song from Midnite Vultures
“Immerse your soul in love”
– Radiohead, “Street Spirit”
“Do you want me to play Jesus
to the lepers in your head?”
– U2, “One”
“If you should die before me, ask if you can bring a friend
Pick a flower, hold your breath and drift away”
Still Remains - Stone Temple Pilots
Another STP song, Pretty Penny has the single line
“Shorter lived and longer gone”
I like it. STP have other excellent lyrics, but I’ll spare you from them
“Hearts and thoughts they fade… fade away”
Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town - Pearl Jam.
“A dumb mistake, too much to pay”
Fingers and Thumbs - Erasure
“For a minute there, I lost myself”
Karma Police - Radiohead
“You got a one way ticket on your last chance ride
You got a one way ticket to your suicide
You got a one way ticket and there’s no way out alive
And all this crass communication that has left you in the cold
Isn’t much for consolation when you feel so weak and old
But if home is where the heart is then there’s stories to be told
No you don’t need a doctor, no one else can heal your soul”
Coma - Guns and Roses
And finally
“(There must be something more)
Than this house
and this street
and this fool who’s sitting here on this seat
and he’s been waiting too long to become someone
every year he makes another excuse
To be wild, oh! to be free
well that’s all you ever wanted to be”
Something more - Southern Sons
“I been working hard, tweleve hours a day
And the money I saved won’t buy my youth again”
Bow River - Cold Chisel
I didn’t mean to fuck you baby,/
I didn’t mean to fuck you,/
I didn’t mean to fuck you,/
but you’re pretty when you’re mine./
I didn’t really love you baby,/
I didn’t really love you.
I didn’t really love you baby,/
but I’m pretty when I lie.
VAST - Pretty When You Cry
Fret for the hour when the hours gone/
Can a one trick night feed forty days?/
I’m in my bed at the break of dawn/
She shivered like a vein slashed bright and new…
She’s got the radio active and it makes me feel okay/
I don’t feel okay…
Pavement - Perfume V
Nothings free/
So fuck me kitten…
Star Me Kitten - REM
And finally, my guess the song lyric that no one got.
Oh her flowing skirt is blowing/
in a transcedental wind/
and she wonders without knowing/
where did we begin?
Hey, I don’t claim to be a poet, but some of the dreck they made us read in my college English classes was little better than jr high yearbook limericks and it was supposed to be excellent examples of modern freeform poetry. I can only compare what I know. Most of the lyrics that have been posted in this thread so far are far better than what’s passing for poetry nowdays. Including Jim Steiman.
