On “What’s Happening,” one of the characters had a distinctive way of saying, “Hey hey hey” when he’d enter with the middle “hey” being higher than the other two. On the Xmas episode, as he entered, he said “Ho ho ho” in the same way.
And that reminds me of when Raj was interviewing the Doobie Brothers for the school newspaper. He asked one of them, “Which Doobie do you be?”
In “Finding Nemo”, a school of fish are playing charades with Dory. The fish school make the shape of a lobster.
Fish, giving a clue: Where’s the butter?
Dory: Oh, it’s on the tip of my tongue!
Which is very odd, because I can’t believe I missed that, but I have absolutely no memory of it. Thank you for that. I really must watch The Hudsucker Proxy again.
The Bridge on the River Kwai - Not generally a funny film, but it has a few lines that are hilarious for people paying attention. An entire third of the film is dedicated to the harsh realities of Saito and his camp but ends with this exchange.
“If I don’t complete this bridge on time I will have to kill myself. What would you do?” - Col. Saito
“Well, I suppose if I were in your shoes I should have to kill myself. Cheers.” - Col. Nicholson
In the original Avengers movie, there is one a lot of folks may have missed the first time they see it. Just after the Hulk has finished pounding Loki into the floor of the Start Penthouse (and there is a nice bit during that, after about 3 smashes, Hulk just holds Loki still for a second or two, as if determining if he is done, then deciding a few more smashes are necessary). As he is walking away (while the crowd in the theater is going wild) Hulk mutters his first words of the movie (IIRC) “Puny God”. This is a play on the old Marvel comic books, where Hulk would also use the word ‘puny’ to describe things he was smashing.
Which reminds me, another little joke was when Cap was assigning the Avengers their missions and said to the Hulk “And Hulk…Smash” which again is a reference to the old comic book character.
I don’t even remember the name of the movie, but it’s some film about rich assholes.
Anyway, there’s a scene where a bunch of people are having drinks around a large coffee table. The table is glass, and very “trendy” - it has an irregular hole cut into the glass in one corner. At one point, one of the characters sets his glass down, and it naturally falls through the hole and splashes on the floor. I thought it was really funny, but reading reviews afterwards, most people didn’t get it - they thought he was being a jerk (“why did he throw his glass on the floor?”).
In “Repo Man”, after Otto’s first repo with Bud, he leaves the office and is walking past Miller who is out in the yard cleaning out the car. He pulls the pine tree air freshener off of the rear view mirror, shows it to Otto and says “You’ll find one in every car. You’ll see.” And sure enough, just about every car in the rest of the movie has one hanging off the mirror.
In Ruthless People, Danny DeVito plays a clothing financier who tells stories of his success to a policeman guarding his house. He then gets a phone call and answers “Vicki? Sorry, Vicki can’t come to the phone right now. My dick in her mouth. She’ll call you back later.”
He then tells the cop “I love getting wrong numbers.”
Reminds me of the music video for Paul Simon’s “You Can Call Me Al,” where Chevy Chase sets a glass of water on the table next to him. Except it’s actually an empty conga drum stand and the glass just drops. He later does the same thing with a penny whistle.
Renault: I’m shutting this place down!
Rick: On what grounds?
Renault: I am shocked! Shocked that there is gambling going on here!
Croupier: Your winnings, sir.
Renault: Thank you.
Oh, the best part of Ruthless People is when Judge Reinhold goes on this screed about having to be ruthless, all the while carefully catching a spider on a piece of paper, then dropping carefully outside the front door. Camera pointing on the front door, Reinhold finishes his rant, then opens the screen door and stomps on the spider.
s1ep16 “Communication Studies”: Somebody says “Beetlejuice”.
s2ep8 “Cooperative Calligraphy”: Somebody says “Beetlejuice”.
s3ep5 “Horror Fiction in Seven Spooky Steps”: Somebody says “Beetlejuice”. A man dressed as Beetlejuice immediately walks past in the background.
There’s two from TV shows I especially like:
From Star Trek TOS: The Squire of Gothos calls Uhura “Fair Maiden” Uhura replies “I am neither!”
From the original Batman TV series: A female villain captures Batgirl and explains to the sidekick that the deathtrap will transform her into a flat cardboard cutout. The male sidekick gives Batgirl the eye and says “What a shame.”
