Favorite recurring SNL sketch that isn't actually funny

I’m sure some (many) of you will argue that no recurring SNL sketch is funny… well, then this should be a cinch for you!

Last week’s episode reminded me how fond I am of Bronx Beat, with Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph. It’s generally not at all funny, but there’s just something about this sketch that I love.

Gilly. It’s just never a funny sketch at all, but there is something about the character that has me in stitches every time. Also, my sister does a great Gilly impression, so that probably has something to do with it.

Will Ferrell and Cheri Oteri as the Cheerleaders.

Every segment was exactly the same:

  • They’re not really on the cheerleading squad.
  • They go to an event that normally wouldn’t have cheerleaders (swim meet, chess club, etc.).
  • They do silly over-the-top cheers and dances.

Never any real laughs in there, but I found it just goofy and pitiful enough to be endearing.

I seem to remember that the “Scotch Boutique” sketch – a store in a failing mall that sold only Scotch tape – had a few sequels set at different stores in the mall. This is 1978-79 or so. I remember loving these – in my memory, they didn’t really even shoot for funny, but merely off-putting and depressing.

The “What up with That?” show/sketch thing is repetitive and never funny. But I always watch it to see

  1. Who the guest star in the middle chair with no lines will be.
  2. The guy in the red sweatsuit dance.

Agreed. Not really funny, per se, but I love the moment when the music starts under what the first guest is saying, and as they trooper on it gets louder and louder until the host jumps in. Not that funny, but I love it. Also, what’s his name from Fleetwood Mac who’s been bumped about a hundred times. Nice.

I’m having a bit of trouble with the concept… a “least evil” type of thing? What horrible-tasting food do you enjoy eating the most?

No, rather - has this thought popped into your head while watching an SNL skit:

“Why am I giggling uncontrollably right now? It’s not even funny!”

The “Oh, I hate when that happens” guys; I got a kick out of them, but it’s more “ugh” humour than “ha ha” humour.

EDIT: Or maybe that wasn’t a recurring sketch?

How about the sketch with Will Ferrell and Rachel Dratch where they were the creepy older couple who kept referring to the other as their lover? They talked about how much they loved making love to each other because that’s what lovers do.

Actually, just about every Will Ferrell skit ever with the exception of Celebrity Jeopardy. That was gold, Jerry.

I have a soft spot for Bill Hader’s Italian talk show host (The Vinny Vedecci Show). I have no idea why.

Vinny Vedecci is funny as hell, even though it’s one of those mad lib sketches where they HAVE to do everything exactly the same each time.

There’s just something about that Mexican talk show they’ve been doing lately, where everybody stops what they’re doing to dance every time the music comes on. Not funny at all, but CAN’T. LOOK. AWAY.

Yes. The Latin talk show is excellent - I can’t stop watching for fear that I’ll miss seeing a fake mustache fly off of someone’s face. And adding that much physical activity while trying to be funny is ripe for someone losing their shit.

I loved “Deep House Dish” when that was still around… not particularly clever but I love dance music and I love when comedy lightheartedly pokes fun at things I like.

I can’t stand Tracy Morgan (not even on 30 Rock) but for some reason I love his “Brian Fellows Safari Planet” sketches.

Hi! I’m Brian Fellows!

It makes me laugh every time I’m in Office Max and go down the labels aisle and see all of the FELLOWES brand stuff.

Our top story tonight…

…with DJ Dynasty Handbag.
I have to nominate an obscure bit that Maya Rudolph did, I think two or three times, Time Traveling Scott Joplin, wherein she dressed as Scott Joplin, sat at a piano, and played ragtime ditties about current events.

The amazing thing: the audience never laughed during these skits. I don’t blame them; they were awkward and kind of humorless. But I just love the sheer audacity of the concept.

Oo-wee Teara, you are so boring!

Pat. Not funny, and more than a little bit offensive…and yet, something about it…

It seems to me that every Bill Brasky sketch fell flat on its ass, but I thought they were hysterical. And now The Most Interesting Man in the World and Chuck Norris are totally ripping them off.
