Smithers’ closeted homosexuality and crush on Mr Burns were absolutely brilliant in the early episodes. Unfortunately, they utterly wrecked it by making it too obvious later on.

Actually, I know they’ve goofed sometimes (I know he calls her Marge on the popsicle-stick episode), but I love that they at least try.

You mean like the very recent episode The Telltale Head where Smithers tells Burns he loves him?
The earlier episodes must have been obviously much subtler about it if it was utterly wrecked and obvious by the eighth episode of the series.
