Have the Democratic and Republican candidates for the presidency ever come from the same state (in a particular race, obviously)?
2016, for one.
Trump and Hillary waited out the election results blocks apart.
Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas were both from Illinois.
1904, Roosevelt vs Parker, both from New York.
1920, Harding vs. Cox, both from Ohio.
1940, Roosevelt vs Willkie, both from New York.
1944: Roosevelt v. Dewey, both from New York.
For what it’s worth, New York has produced by far the most presidential nominees of any state in the Democrat vs. Republican era - 27 candidates (assuming Trump officially locks down the GOP nomination again this summer).
Second-most is Illinois, with 9.
I believe that, in 2019, Trump changed his official primary residence to Mar-a-Lago, making him now a Florida resident.
Ah, okay. 25 then.
But yes, in any same-state intra-battle for the presidency, the New York (D) vs. New York (R) would probably be the most common matchup.
