“Wooden Ships” - Paul Kantner (with some help)
Bowie “Sound and Vision”
I can’t believe I’m the first one to say Leonard Cohen’s* Hallelujah*.
Glenn Frey - Hotel California.
Mine too.
“Winter Lady” Leonard Cohen
Bowie: Jean Genie
Leonard, by Merle Haggard. An absolutely amazing reflection on art, friendship, and knowing what your life’s calling is. (IIRC, the “Leonard” was noted country songwriter Tommy Collins).
Merle Haggard. Today I Started Loving You Again
Easily one of the top ten country songs ever written.
Just to be different, I’m going with Estupenda Graca (Amazing Grace), featuring vocals and backing instruments by Nana Vasconcelos.
“Everybody Cryin’ Mercy”–Mose Allison…
Lots of other choices, but I had to pick one.
I only knew the Elvis Costello version.
Thanks for posting that.
mmm
Agreed with the first part for me, not with the second. ![]()
Mr Somewhere by This Mortal Coil, sung by Caroline Crawley of Shelleyan Orphan (that is Deirdre Rutkowski, not her in the album cover on youtube, this was her)
Argh, why must you make me choose? Alright then. Bowie: ‘Always crashing in the same car’.
It’s my opinion that Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah is simply beyond the ability of one person’s talent to write. Absolute perfection.
Too many to choose from but the one I keep coming back to this year is
“it’s gonna be lonely” from “Prince”…by…er…“Prince”
Utterly beautiful, tragically apt and the part where he finally starts to let loose (around 3:30) always raises goosebumps. Can’t find any link to it but if you don’t know the song and do have a passing liking for Prince then please do your eardrums a favour and get hold of it (the song or the album)
No Voices in the Sky - Motorhead
I had forgotten Mose. I was going to pick Bowie’s “Suffragette City,” but I’ll switch to Allison’s “Parchman Farm.” The final line is chilling.
