Favorite Songs as a Kid

I’m really talking about your favorite song when you were a kid that was most influenced by one of you parents. Lemme try and explain… I am 23 years old and my dad listened to the oldies constantly. Now I absolutely love Song Sung Blue by Neil Diamond, and this is a direct relation to my father. I cannot listen to it without thinking of him. Just curious if everybody else has a similar song. If so please list, thanks. P.S this is my first thread that I started so be gentle.

Threads about music (songs) go in Cafe Society.

I’ll (gently) move it for you.

I Wish and Sir Duke from Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life. Yes, it was on vinyl, wanna make something of it?

I am twice your age, Sinyster1, and my dad loved to listen to Big Band, swing type music. Any time I hear Benny Goodman music, particularly Sing Sing Sing, I am reminded of my dad rockin’ to Benny on warm Saturday mornings, when we were loading up the car to go to the beach.

On another note: the father of a good friend of mine, who was quite a character, always used to sing Neil Diamond’s Song Sung Blue, usually on a Friday night when he was a bit tipsy. He is now no longer with us, but whenever I hear that song, I am reminded of The Commander.

I Think I Love You, by the Partridge Family. My sister and I sang it in the car all the way from Bangor, ME to Lake Grove, Long Island once. My grandmother, bless her heart, didn’t lose her mind or anything. She was driving.

My parents listened to drivel. Mitch Miller Sing-alongs. 101 Strings Play Background Music from Bad Movies. Kate Smith Sings Sousa Marches.

The only albums my parents had that I could stand?

Kingston Trio and harry belafonte.

Still love 'em. Have found mp3’s. Burned alt-country (alt-folk? alt-skiffle?) CD’s for friends, all with “Scotch and Soda” on them. Bought an old MONO Belafonte album. On vinyl, though the turntable hasn’t worked in years…

My parents loved The Beatles and listened to them all the time, as a result, I hated them. Now I’m all grown up and I love The Beatles more then my parents ever did.

From my mother - The Beatles’ entire catalog, Queen’s entire catalog, and Boney M’s Hooray Hooray, its a Holiday
My father - Anything with bagpipes (esp Scotland the Brave,) Silly Wizard, and more bagpipes.

No wonder I’m so twisted.

So there on Scotland the Brave and the bagpipes! I knew I couldn’t be the only one. My aunt used to sing “Another One Bites the Dust” to us in the car. I liked the “and another one’s gone and another one’s gone” part best. The intro to All Things Considered is something we heard every Sunday going to the beach with my dad; while it’s not really a song it was and still is one of my favorites.

I hear you, Caprese! My father was a Count Basie/Stan Kenton man, and I am still looking for the ONE version of “Intermission Riff” that blared through our house every Sunday!

And stolatt, I am playing Songs in the Key of Life, in its entirety, at my wedding reception! (OK, OK, I’m not even engaged at this point–not even dating anyone–but I can’t think of another forum that would allow me to have as much of a captive audience for my big party whims!)

“As” is one of my favorite songs ever. You had some cool-ass parents. (I, on the other hand, being a “late”–or “surprise”–child, had siblings old enough to be my parents, which is why I love Stevie!)

My mom had such a variety of albums that we’d listen to. Some that really stand out to me are:

Bird Dog - Everly Brothers
Only You - The Platters
It’s Now or Never - Elvis
Always Marry An Ugly Girl - I have no idea who sang this. It was on one of her Grand Ole Opry albums
Beer Barrel Polka - as played by Frank Yankovic

I still love these songs. I really feel that her eclectic taste in music really helped shaped my tastes.
