Favorite Soothing Female Vocalists?

I’m shocked nobody has mentioned Sade or Anita Baker…

Dusty Springfield

I posted this elsewhere, and Sade was probably the 3rd most mentioned. But no one did mention Anita Baker.

Seconded.

Let me reduce your shock by 50%, thanks to Leaffan back in post #26:

Suzy Bogguss has a really beautiful voice.

Wow! Totally missed that! My bad…

Nora O’Connor

Sorry about the commercial.

No worries - it was on another site

(I like to compare)

I used to have a radio show and made mixtapes for people on a music mailing list, including a lot of artists mentioned in this thread. Over a decade ago I jettisoned the talking and made digital “mixtapes”. Here’s one with a lot of wonderful voices. I can post links to more if interested.

Nuska Drascek

I’m quite partial to Daichin Tana.

+1 vote for Karen Peris of Innocence Mission. “Revolving Man” is a great exemplar.

I’m unclear. So that’s a “no” for Norah??

I’m surprised it took so long for the posting above for Eva Cassidy

Maggie Macneal. I have a youtube mix of nothing but her (and sometimes with Mouth)- really helps me work to have her in the background. Love Julee Cruise too.

Jo Stafford, from the 40s-50s, had the smoothest voice ever.

Jane Olivor

You know who was really great? Judee Sill.

I first heard about her about a month ago in one of those NY Times obituaries devoted to historical women they didn’t bother to give obituaries to in the past. She was a junkie and stick-up artist who released two acoustic albums in the 70s. They did poorly and she died broke in 1979. Check her out on Spotify. Here’s a taste…
