Favorite unkown rock band

Gypsy Soul…music so touching, I’ve actually cried at a performance. Simply beautiful stuff.

I know almost all of these bands. It’s fucking sick…

I am slowly putting my collection into a catalog. When I do this, I shall post my collectiion (3,000 CDs, 750 Tapes, 500 Vinyl LPs, 100 Singles, 2 8-tracks!) in its entirety to see what everyone has to say!

Yer pal,

*TIME ELAPSED SINCE I QUIT SMOKING:
Three months, three weeks, two days, 3 hours, 55 minutes and 37 seconds.
4566 cigarettes not smoked, saving $570.82.
Life saved: 2 weeks, 1 day, 20 hours, 30 minutes.

“Satan is not an unattractive person.”*-Drain Bead (Thanks for the ringing endoresement, honey!)

Stinking Lizaveta. They hail from Philly. Absolutely the best metal trio out there. Jazz and Punk influenced. No vocals. Tremendous talent, and tight as shite.

Cry Baby Cry. From D.C. While Fugazi and the Make-up get all the press, CBC has been putting out some serious psychedelic post-punk. And they sing on key!

yes, Satan, please let us know… i’m very interested to see what is in your collection !

I saw dada supporting Crowded House in 93, they were shit hot.
If this thread were running 18 months ago, I would have said Semisonic, but they’re bigtime now.

How about guys like Eric Matthews, Jason Falkner ???

The Tea Party has to be my favourtie “unknown” band. I discovered them about a year ago, and have seen them live three times since. The songs are pure gems, and they ROCK live. They’re from Toronto, IIRC. Just like that other Rock Trio I forget right now
Their live version of Sister Awake includes pieces of Bowies Heroes and Cohens Hallelujah. Man, that version kicks ass!

Fates Warning is up there too. Almost as good as their friends Dream Theater, who did make it big. Some fantastic songs, and great musicians. You haven’t lived untill you see The Eleventh Hour live!

Basque, from Nyc. Kinda like the Cocteau twins, but way stripped down. The singer has the most beautiful voice I’ve ever heard.

Johnny Dowd. Born in Fort worth, now lives in upstate New York. Kind of like Tom Waits meets Hank Williams with Neil Young on guitar. Deep twisted gut wrenching stuff.

Found a band from New York in hte record club magazine last year, They had a decent writeup and I ordered it. Great kick-ass rock and roll. Darlahood. Never heard of them before or since. Good cd though.

Got another one from the same magazine, Failure. Different, but good. A friend described them as heroin music.

V.

I just heard ‘I want to see you bellydance’. Man, they are GREAT!

ALso, I love a punk/metal band called Lagwagon. They’ve put out 6 albums, but I don’t know anyone else who has heard of them.

I know Lagwagon! Not well, but I have heard of them. A few more obscure bands: Superdrag, Creeper Lagoon, Orbit. I was frequenting the funky record store the other day and was pleased to see that The Dandy Warhols are releasing a new album soon. Yeah! Wilco’s definately not obscure, but they’re not mainstream yet, either. And I believe my new favorite CD, Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies, were discussed in another thread, but they’re the side project of a lot of interesting people, most noteably, the guy from NOFX.

[hyjack]I met Skippy at the Montreal comedy fest. I was with a friend who was the official representative of the Comedy Store in LA, and so Skippy kissed our asses trying to get booked. Heh.[/hyjack]

Outrider sez:

I saw Modest Mouse play at Irving Plaza a couple months ago. The show was enjoyable, but it wasn’t spectacular. The music was actually pretty boring and their stage presence was dull. The opening band, Trans Am, was awesome, though. I love it when the opening act outshines the headliner.

As far as obscure bands - I’ll just name some of my friends bands so they get free publicity:

Pachinko
Tormentula
Pete
Skavoovie & The Epitones
The Pilfers
Dem Brooklyn Bums

That sounds like my brother’s collection–except he’s got about 3000 vinyl records and 500 CDs. He’s f-ing sick, too.

When I lived in Raleigh a couple of years ago, a friend of mine was in a group called Punch Drunk Piranha. I lost touch with him (my boyfriend and I split up when he wanted to be their roadie), but I was wondering if you know if they are still together. They used to play at the Brewery on Hillsborough St. and they’ve “opened” for Dry White Toast a few times and also played in Wilmington a few times.

I’m having multiple brain farts today–sorry.

Nobody’s ever heard of them, but they’ve been making fantastic music since the late 80’s.

I’ve got a great cover of ‘Country Roads’ by them on a compilation tape. It’s ‘Survival of the fattest’ on Fat Wreck records.

Spooje, they only do punk covers. Their first album was 70s adult contemporary classics, Leavin’ on a Jetplane, et all. Their second album, which I have been forcing all my friends to listen to, is all punk covers of showtunes. You haven’t lived until you’ve heard their “I Sing the Body Electric.” Or the everpopular tune in the punk scene, “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina.” Fat Wreck is a great little label, they’ve got a lot of rockin’ acts on it.

I’ve heard of Alice Donut. They’re on Dead Kennedys’ record label, Alternative Tentacles. I have a song by them on a DK tribute album.

Nomeansno is pretty cool. D.O.A. also.

<Pictures Green Day and Madonna belting out Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina at the top of their lungs>

So is my friend’s aforementioned band, Pachinko. I got to meet Jello Biafra once because of it, too.
