Favorite Web Sites

Besides, of course, the Straight Dope, what are some of your favorite web sites.

During the NATO bombing in Kosovo, I got hooked on www.stratfor.com.

well aside from my own sites
I like www.stefcam.com www.weirdal.com www.amused.com amazon and the imbd, and a bunch of others.

Every day a different topic, the ratings are the best, in my opinion.

www.washingtonpost.com
(Decent newspaper for free, and links to more comic strips than the mind can imagine…)

(Occasionally bizzare, always funny.)

Notes and queries - highly recommended
(massive Q&A site answering all those questions you were never sure about)

www.losers.org - recommended
(a collection of the worst websites around)

www.upmystreet.com
(for my fellow Brit posters, a site that compares your neighbourhood against the national average for things like crime, ambulance response times, house prices, police clear-up rates etc)

www.useit.com/alertbox
(articles on how to write for the web - not design, but about content and planning)

www.open.gov.uk
(links to all British government sites - including fascinating things like the Air Accident Investigation Board’s list of accident reports, or the Marine Protection Agency’s reports on impounded vessels)

News for Nerds - stuff that matters http://slashdot.org/

Thanks mattk, for the useit.com link. I just volunteered to assist the webmaster for the charity group I work with because the site is FULL of things that need to be changed (missing alt tags, no meta tags, terrible text/content, links that don’t work, etc.). Having that site to refer to will help tremendously in communicating with him so I don’t have to type everything out in emails to him myself, because it addresses so many of the issues that need correcting on our site. Thank you!

All right, I’m seeing a lot of potential bookmark material from you guys! Keep 'em coming. Looks like I’ve got a bit of reading to do.

Here’s my list :

Dave Barry’s Official Site has his current humor column for the week, an archive of all the columns of the past year, plus some other stuff he wrote for the Herald that wasn’t in his syndicated column.

MP3 Locator searches all of the alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.* newsgroups. It’s great not having to wade through 50,000 plus headers during a 2 weeks period in some of these groups.

Bell Labs Text-to-Speech Synthesis - Hear a robotic-sounding voice utter the perverted words of your choosing! Guaranteed to bug the hell out of your friends and family!

Mr Hat’s Hellhole is a great South Park site with links to episodes encoded in RealMedia for poor folks like me who don’t get Comedy Central because their cable companies suck. Another good place to get episodes and avoid the FTP traffic is alt.binaries.southpark. Often they have mpeg-encoded episodes as well, which look a helluva lot better than RM.
