Favorite Woody Allen Movie

Mine is definitely, absolutely, without a doubt Bananas But, at a close second is Radio Days . What’s yours?

I’ve always liked his first feature, Take the Money and Run, which can be absolutely side-splitting at times. I still go into convulsions when he attempts to play the cello in a marching band.

Annie Hall easily. One of the best comedies ever made.

I like most of his films. Love and Death is his funniest pure comedy. From that point on, he tried to do much more than just be funny.

Annie Hall was probably his best, but I also would put Bullets Over Broadway – the first of his “artist as bastard” trilogy – up there.

I really like Annie Hall, Manhattan and Hannah and her sisters. For me these are vintage Woody Allen: a perfect mix between comedy and drama. If I really had to choose, I guess I’d put Hannah and her sisters first because of the sophistication of the movie, then Annie Hall. But I’d rather not choose.

Funny to see how tastes differ on this matter. Could there be an age difference? I started off with seeing the movies I just mentioned and only thereafter saw his older work. I never really cared much for what he has done since. Good quality, some fun, but nothing impressive.

Age difference? Maybe. Well, I’m 14.

I’m pretty partial to Hannah and her Sisters. I also like Bullets… though, and Sleeper, although that last one has aged badly in parts.

I was too young when Annie Hall came out, so I didn’t see it until many years later. I think a lot of it is very “70s specific” and I didn’t experience that decade the same way. In short, by the time I saw it it seemed almost as dated as Sleeper.

Zelig, Love and Death, Bananas and What’s Up Tiger Lily?

Play It Again, Sam
Annie Hall
Hannah and Her Sisters

I dunno - I’m almost 50 and I loved Bananas!

You and me both, FairyChatMom.

Of course, I’m prejudiced about Bananas, as I work at some of its locations, and have met a few of the players.

(Rebels are we,
Born to be free,

Other than that, Annie Hall, Zelig, Love And Death

(“Are you proposing passive resistance?” “No, I’m proposing active fleeing!”)

Oh, and WUTL is also, erm, interesting

Love and Death is my favorite. Annie Hall is overall a better movie, but Love and Death is just one of the funniest movies ever made. And you can’t beat the soundtrack.

I don’t know about favorite, but Sleeper sure cracks me up, as does What’s Up Tiger Lily?

“Spartan dog!” - Phil Moskowitz, suave Japanese super-spy

Funniest - Love and Death. “You’re a wonderful lover!” “Oh, well, you see, I practice a lot, you know, when I’m… alone.”

2nd Funniest - Take the Money and Run. “There was, however, the unfortunate side effect that for several hours he turned into a rabbi.”

Best Film - Manhattan. “You think you’re God!” “Well, I have to model myself after somebody.”

I was going to say Banana’s, but then Laughing brought up Sleeper. Oh yeah, Connie at the drive-in. Great movie…

I think the absolute funniest scene in a Woody Allen film (I think it was Play it Again Sam, but I’m not sure) was when he’s trying to pick up so me whacked-out chick in a Modern Art museum. After she gives him some morbid description of a painting:

Allen: What are you doing Saturday night?
Chick: Committing suicide.
Allen: How about Friday night?

But my favorite W.A. movie is Crimes and Misdemeanors. What a great combination of comedy and seriousness.

It was.

I’m a major Woody Allen fan. I’ve seen all of them, and don’t think I can pick a favorite.

The line I’ve repeated most often is from Annie Hall though, when she’s driving and he’s terrified. She tries to parallel-park, and asks, “How’s my parking?” or some such. His response:

“This is fine! We can walk to the curb from here.”

I’ve used that one many, many times in real life.

If forced to choose a favorite film, I might say Hannah and Her Sisters, but I’m not sure.

I like the stuff he did in the nineties.
Everyone Says I love you
Husbands and Wives
Deconstucting Harry

Any fans of the newer movies?
