The Bob Newhart Show (the one from the 70’s) is being released in April.
Really? Yay!
I’m insanely jealous of your Max Headroom tapes! That was a great show. Can I come over and watch Max Headroom with you?
My favorite DVDs are Rocky and Bullwinkle and Invader Zim. On my list of DVDs I want to get: X-Files, Buffy, Futurama, the Simpsons (I only have Season 2), Angel. And the Invader Zim boxed set.
bclouse, The Tick was a great show! I can’t believe it wasn’t on longer. Those Fox executives sure are stoopid!
Another vote for Wonderfalls, one of the most charming and offbeat shows of recent times. Whimsy often takes quite a bit of time to find its audience, and this show didn’t get much time. It was canceled abruptly, but thanks to DVD, we can still see a nice selection of episodes. The 16x9 format seems artificial, though. I suspect that it was shot for 4x3, and they cropped it.
You’ll have to help me find them! IIRC, they’re on unmarked VHS tapes. And I’m not sure if they’re in the house or in the storage unit.
Scrubs Season 1, coming on May 17th:
No problem–I’m good at finding stuff! Back in my student days, I worked in the archives, where we had a whole wall full of old-timey records (the vinyl kind). Not once, but twice, I found a record someone else was looking for in less than 10 seconds. Not bad!
I forgot to tell you–I like chocolate chip cookies just a little bit underdone, so they’re gooey in the middle.
I am still waiting for:
Daria
Hill Street Blues
The Paper Chase
Whats with only season one of Barney Miller, released about a year ago???
The Greatest American Hero has finally shown up on DVD…
These are the TV shows TVGeek and I own on DVD:
Red Dwarf
Aqua Teen Hungerforce
Family Guy
Captain Scarlet
Thunderbirds
Robotech
About Red Dwarf…It’s my favorite show. I can watch it for hours and days on end. I rewatch the same episodes at least once a week. But, I’m more likely to watch the eps we have on VHS, recorded from PBS. The cast commentary is mostly good but the commentary was done so long after the shows that the crew don’t remember a lot of stuff. They have some funny stories but it’s not as funny as you’d expect. As for the eps, some of the additional footage is good. Some is ok. Most is boring. There’s a reason it wasn’t included in the PBS showings. The song is different and I really dislike it.
So, it’s nice to watch without static from old tapes and it’s nice to not have to rewind. Other than that, it’s not that impressive.
Just thought of another one in the “Quirky, Funny and Touching” category:
Northern Exposure.
The first two seasons are out, but they’re very short seasons. IIRC, it was first a summer replacement show, and then a mid-season replacement show, so they only made a few episodes each time around. Then it finally made it onto the regular schedule and got a full-episode treatment (20-some episodes).
They should have combined them into one set. The first season is only 8 episodes, and the second is only 7 episodes, but they both have lots of extras, like deleted scenes and goofs.
The best part is that the DVD box comes in a cute little down vest cover with a moose pull-tab on the zipper. The first season is in bright orange and the second is in yellow.
Obviously, I am easily amused.
Well, early May you will be able to get The Adventures of Pete and Pete. A kids show, sure, but way before its time and one of the quarkiest shows not mentioned so far.
Durn. Opened this thread specifically to recommend Sports Night and saw your post. (nitpick – it’s two words, not one) It’s still my favorite TV show of recent years.
Hmm, TV shows i have on DVD…
Family Guy (Season 1 and 2, complete set)
Futurama (Seasons 1-4, complete sets)
Farscape (all 4 seasons and PK Wars, can i get a Frell Yeah?!?)
Sledge Hammer! Season 1
Dilbert (complete Series)
The Tick live action show
shows i’m planning on getting…
Battlestar Galactica (skiffy’s reimaging, the original is too frakkin’ cheesy for me, loved it as a kid, but can’t get past the wooden acting and reuse of stock spacecraft footage…)
Most of what I was going to recommend is here already, but you must add *Soap to your list. Three seasons and no one seems to notice it. Brilliant writing and acting all over the place, it’s worth the money for Richard Mulligan alone. Go get um.

In fairness, I did mention Robert Guillaume as Benson, a character originated on Soap before his eponymous spinoff.
I’ll add another vote for Arrested Development - an excellent comedy series. It’s American made, but it’s definitely not a typical sitcom.
I’d also recommend Boomtown (the first season is on DVD). It had the potential to be a great series but it got shafted by its network.
Fawlty Towers was my favorite.
Prime Suspect 1 thru 6
