Favourite Warren Zevon song

I want to change my vote to Hasten Down the Wind. What a gorgeous song and how could I have forgotten it?

Pffft, you’re just copying what I said. Or meant to say.

Werewolves of London was my first love, but Lawyers, Guns, and Money just has so damn much truth in it that my heart wants to go there. I actually texted “send lawyers, guns, and money” to a friend on a really bad day. It is just so fucking perfect.

Nighttime in the Switching Yard
“the midnight train runs both ways”

I never have a single favorite of anything, but if I have to pick one, I’m a weirdo who would name Hit Somebody! (The Hockey Song).

I grew up in a hockey (fan) family and loved Hockey Night in Canada on Saturdays. The surface story of the song is great and really captures the feel of hockey culture with great references. But the underlying theme and meaning behind the lyrics are just so beautifully bittersweet. I still will tear up and my voice will quaver every time I sing along.

Warren Zevon will now leap from his grave and kill everyone who said “Werewolves of London”.

“The Envoy” gets the most play on my ipod, followed by “Seminole Bingo” and “Life’ll Kill Ya.”

I really like Disorder in the House and Dirty Life and Times from The Wind. Certainly more poignant, knowing the circumstances.

My favorite Zevon song changes from time to time - so much greatness, so hard to choose.

If I had to pick one, I’d have to say “Desperados Under the Eaves”. It encapsulates everything that was great about Warren Zevon’s music. It’s dark, yet witty. Poignant, but hard-boiled. It tells a story, but also works as pure atmosphere. Great musicianship, but still not sounding over-processed or artificial.

From his later catalog I think one of his best songs is “Genius”. Or at least, it’s one of his best songs that rarely seems to make a ‘best Zevon song’ list, so I’ll toss it out there.

I agree. That’s a very good description.

Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner has been my favorite since a friend of mine sang it onstage in high school.

You have to appreciate “My Shit’s Fucked Up” though.

Can’t believe I’m the first to say “Ain’t that pretty at all”, though I like almost every other song suggested already as well.

At one time, I learned the repeated piano part for werewolves, but the last time I tried playing it, my hands wouldn’t work well enough. :frowning:
I never learned to play piano, but I could do that one.

Yep, “Model Citizen”. Or “Finishing Touches”. Or “Excitable Boy”.

I didn’t really discover Warren until he died, and haven’t pursued it aggressively, so I still have a lot to learn about. It’s always a pleasure when a heretofore-unknown-to-me Zevon song turns up on Pandora or something.

They played “Excitable Boy” at a high school dance I went to when I was in Grade 10 …

I thought the only song he did was Werewolves of Thunder, and now I have learned from this thread that he had done other songs and I had the werewolves title wrong all this time.

However, I will still sing it with “thunder” instead of “London”.

You thought Warren Zevon recorded one song in his career and it was titled “Werewolves of Thunder”?

AHOOOOOO crash werewolves of thunder. AHOOOOOOO blinding light

Really glad someone else chose The Envoy. I don’t know if it’s my absolute favorite, but I love to crank that up in the car and sing along.

Also love Desperados Under the Eaves. Amazing song.

As much as I like all of his work, “Keep Me in Your Heart” is my favorite. Especially since he knew he was dying when he wrote it. Beautiful song and lyrics.

I thought Werewolves of Thunder was the only song that mattered.
