Fearless Prediction: Pastafarianism will be a serious, unironic religion within 100 years.

I mean, if religions created in modern times, with well-documented logical flaws and weaknesses (Scientology, Mormonism) can be taken seriously, why not?

I’d give Jedi the inside track - far cooler clothing. Still there’s a chance. In for a penne, in for a pound.

I’ll second the notion that people will subscribe to a belief system that is not supported by logic, but what is less obvious is why people would be drawn to a treat it as a real faith when everyone knows it was openly begun as a farce to mock Christian fundamentalists.

The original Mormons, although accepting a bizarre origin story from Joseph Smith, weren’t playing at religion. It’s possible the highest echelons of Scientology know they are peddling nonsense, but the lower adherents are not doing Scientology for the fun of it.
There’s no equivalent Pastafarians. I mean, are there even Pastafarians doing “ironic” Pastafarianism as a full on religion? If not, how is it supposed to turn serious and unironic?

I think this misrepresents its purpose somewhat. Of course it is a parody, but it was begun to illustrate the logical consequences of privileging religious beliefs in society. The specific original purpose was in opposition to the teaching of ID in science classes. I think it remains, in essence, a tool to resist violation of the Establishment Clause (or equivalent rights and principles outside the U.S.)

Let the punishment fit the crime.
