February 3, 2007: My Neighbor Still Has Their Christmas Tree Up

Granted, they stopped turning it on a week ago, but I can see it is still there in their living room.

The husband has a full time job, but the wife is home all day and there are two college age kids at home as well.

I don’t particularly care if they keep it up all year, but wouldn’t you think the Yuletide spirit starts to dwindle a bit as the Valentine’s candy boxes are put under the tree until the Easter bunny shows up and hides the eggs under it?

Well, maybe they just like it. For example, my wife likes our little Christmas tree so much that she proposed me to keep it in full regalia for a little while more. Who am I to forbid it?

It’s the lesser known (but not less loved) Valentine’s Day er, bush…

(my grandmother used to do this-they would move the --real–tree, intact to the sunporch and she would get around to taking it down in oh, April). It was brown by them. Odd thing is, my grandfather worked for the US Forestry Service–and he was always on us about forest fires etc…

It could be an artificial tree - which means it’s not drying out.

Maybe they’re keeping the tree up because, dammit, Grandma said she’s going to walk out of that hospital, and she will - and when she does, she’s going to come over and she’s going to see the tree with all the special ornaments she’s helped the family collect through the years.

Maybe Uncle Bob finally got a job after being laid off for so long, and he and Aunt Jean and the kids wanted so much to come for Christmas, but Bob’s the new guy so he couldn’t get any time off until President’s Day weekend, and they’ll be driving in then, and by God we’re gathering the whole family together and we’re all going to celebrate Christmas together just like we planned, no matter what the calendar may say.

Or maybe they just think it’s so beautiful they can’t bear to take it down.

Or maybe it’s hiding a really ugly stain in the carpet :stuck_out_tongue:

Hmm lets see;

I still have my tiny Aluminium tree with the fiber optic lights up, turned it on last night.

Wreath still over the mantel, check, usually take it down in May.

Santa parachuting being towed by the plane with the elf in an open cockpit, yep, they stay up all year. I kind of like to watch them spinning around at odd moments.

Christmas isn’t a season, it’s a state of mind.

BTW, I’m not one of those crazy perfect Christmas people either. We don’t even celebrate on “THE” day many years; sometimes we’re early sometimes late. Just sent out a Christmas present last week, and one the week before. Two more to go and I’m done for this season.

We just took ours down yesterday and we kept it lit-up until its final moments. There is nothing more depressing than an un-lit Christmas tree. Sure I would have liked to take it down sooner, but I won’t lose any sleep over it.

DMark, where are you at that it was still February 3 when you posted this? Midway Islands?

If it’s any consolation, I (well, we) didn’t even put up a tree this year, so the ‘net sum of Christmasness’ is actually 0.

I was just too damn busy, being on the road, and getting the girlfriend moved in and such.

Tripler
Ho ho no.

Ours is still up. Both, really, since we have a tiny one in the dining room. Both are fake, so no drying up and no fire hazard. We stopped turning on their lights around the first week of January, then got caught up in work, then went on a trip, and simply haven’t gotten around to taking them down. I sort of think I should do it now, because it is annoying me, but we have other things to do before heading out to a SuperBowl party, so… who knows when I’ll get to it! Soon, though.

My tree has been up since November 30, 2002. It’s not laziness anymore, it’s a tradition.

I just took our (articficial) tree down about a hour ago. The last few weekends have been kinda busy & I just didn’t get around to it. And no, it hasn’t been lit since the 12th day of Xmas.

Ialso pulled down our outside lights today. the colored ones hadn’tbeen on since the 12 day, and the all white ones lasted a week or so after that, since they look more like landscaping highlights, not Xmas decs.

I also took down the stockings from over the fireplace. Last year they inadvertantly got skipped & we first really noticed they were still up some time in June. At which point they just HAD to stay up to make it all the way around to this year.

But now it’s all put away.

Maybe later today I will remove the wreath, or maybe not.

Holidays are when you want them, not when the System orders you to have them.

There’s a house down the street from me that not only has their Chirstmas tree up, they have their outdoor lights still up too. They light them both up every night. They have one of those 2 story living rooms with a 30 foot monster tree.

My tree is still up too. It’s artificial, so I don’t have to worry about drying. It’s been about 3 weeks since we even lit it. Oh well, I’ll get around to it.

My tree is still up, too. I have no excuses about a child overseas or an ill family member. I only got around to putting three ornamnets on it, too, so I can’t even say it’s because it looks so pretty. And until two weeks ago the weather was pretty mild, so I could have hauled it down the stairs and out to the car and stuffed it in the back seat and driven it to the storage unit…but I didn’t, and now it’s too cold. Though I do need to pay the storage bill tomorrow, so maybe when I’m cleaning today I’ll get inspired…or not.

Well, you know, I’ve still got my icicle lights on, and nets on my bushes… and an animatronic sea lion. I don’t turn them on anymore, though. Mostly because somebody stole my extension cords.

What can I say? I’ve been lazy and it’s been cold.

I dated a guy who left his natural tree up until every needle fell off. I think it was sometime in August.

I just have a small apartment, so I didn’t have a tree or large decorations. However, I do still have my Christmas-present-wrapping supplies (wrapping paper, bows, tape) on the floor in my living room. They’ve been there since Christmas Eve.

Guess I’ll be putting those away tonight.

In that case, I need to alert my family to never expect another Christmas present from me.

(I put a real Christmas tree in my car to take to recycling one year, and didn’t get around to it for awhile. It made me laugh to drive around with a Christmas tree in my car, and think of it as a pine air freshener. Yes, I’m one of those blessed, easily-amused folks. )

Took our artificial tree down last weekend just because we’re too damned lazy to have done it earlier.

This is exactly why I don’t decorate. Mine would still be up, I’m sure, if I had put any up.

I put all my stuff away at the appropriate time like a good little bear. However, I really do like my fiber optic tree and considered leaving it up just so I could watch the lights. They fascinate me.

Goes over to join featherlou in the easily amused corner.

I had a “real” tree a few years ago that was only about 4’ tall and sat in a solid block of wood. I’m not a Christmas person and the tree was a gift from a very good friend so I didn’t like to refuse it.

In the end, it never got decorated for Christmas and once the season was over, the tree was left to dry out. Once it was “dead” and the needles had gone, I spray-painted it black and it now comes out every year in it’s new guise as a hallowe’en tree. I made loads of funky decorations for it and all my friends think it’s a great idea.
