Fedora Core 5 resolution stuck at 800 x 600

I’ve recently installed Fedora Core 5 on my machine but I’ve been having trouble getting the screen resolution above 800 x 600. I’ve tried installing ATI’s drivers but those didn’t make a difference. I then tried following the steps at Fedora Core 5 Installation Notes but those didn’t work so I removed them. What happens with the second set of drivers is that my monitor starts acting like it isn’t plugged into my tower.

I’m not so much concerned with 3D acceleration (though it would be nice) as I am with getting a higher resolution.

Specify which keyboard LEDs can be user-controlled (eg, with xset(1))

Option “Xleds” “1 2 3”

To disable the XKEYBOARD extension, uncomment XkbDisable.

Option “XkbDisable”

To customise the XKB settings to suit your keyboard, modify the

lines below (which are the defaults). For example, for a non-U.S.

keyboard, you will probably want to use:

Option “XkbModel” “pc102”

If you have a US Microsoft Natural keyboard, you can use:

Option “XkbModel” “microsoft”

Then to change the language, change the Layout setting.

For example, a german layout can be obtained with:

Option “XkbLayout” “de”

or:

Option “XkbLayout” “de”

Option “XkbVariant” “nodeadkeys”

If you’d like to switch the positions of your capslock and

control keys, use:

Option “XkbOptions” “ctrl:swapcaps”

Or if you just want both to be control, use:

Option “XkbOptions” “ctrl:nocaps”

Anyone have any ideas?

I poked around a little bit, but didn’t come up with anything specific. (Also, not running fedora nor using the same hardware makes it difficult to troubleshoot.) From what I gather, it sounds like a driver issue. The closest thing I found that seems relevant is here (and the followup thread linked at the bottom, which is here).

I hope that’s at least some help…

I think I fixed the problem. I played around with system-config-display and got the resolution to go higher.

Now I just need to get the flash and java plugins to work.

Ah, good. I can’t help with the above, as I’ve never bothered with either. I seem to remember reading that newer versions of flash don’t work on Linux, though…

Firefox, as I recall, will pop up an option to download those, and from there it just goes.

I already used the installation notes to install them, I just can’t get firefox to acknowledge it.

I think the problem is I’m using the 64 bit version of FC5 and the plugins only work with the 32 bit.

That would be a problem. Not everything has been ported to 64-bit, and certainly flash hasn’t. You need to run in a “chroot” environment – if you were using Debian, the documentation looks pretty clear. FC5? No idea, sorry.

I’m downloading the 32 bit version now. Thankfully I have another DVD-R.
