Feds Hoard Narcotics in Ft. Knox...For Whom?

Years ago some U.S. Senators demanded a tour inside the vaults to see if their really was gold to back up the Treasury (even though USA was off the gold standard).
The gold was all there.
So was – to the astonishment of the lawmakers – a gigantic supply of the finest narcotics on earth. This is the information age; look it up.
My question: who were they hoping to help not endure the agony of “cold turkey” or was there some other excuse?

The drugs were opium and morphine, which were stockpiled for medicinal use in case the foreign supply was cut off. (It’s been nearly two decades since that article was written, so the drugs might not be there anymore.)

I would imagine any drugs stockpiled by the military would be for use by the military. War injuries are painful. (Indeed, ALL injuries are painful, but in the case of war, you have young, healthy people deliberately maiming and killing each other.)

What is the shelf life (so to speak) of opiates?

It sure puts Auric Goldfinger’s scheme in a new light…

I took your advice and looked it up. It took two seconds on Google to learn about the opium in Ft. Knox, as well as learning about the National Pharmaceutical Stockpile.

Did you look it up? At all?

firstfalseNero, you have started five threads in General Questions since you joined today, none of them appropriate for this forum. Four were better placed in Great Debates; the first was moved and I have closed the other three including this one. One was moved to Cafe Society.

Before you start more threads, I would strongly suggest you familiarize yourself with the forum rules and conventions of this site. You may open a new thread on this topic in Great Debates, but ensure you frame the debate properly. Also, five debates on different subjects are too many to effectively engage in at once; I suggest you limit yourself to no more than one at a time.
