Female Singers belting it out

And now for something completely different.

Morgan James, who’s more of a pop singer, but she’s done some other styles with Postmodern Jukebox including this torchy version of Aerosmith’s “Dream On.”

Let’s bring the conversation back to the legends. Patsy…taken too soon.

Cher was such a stunning ethnic beauty.

Stevie Nicks kills it in this performance.

For voice and presence, I don’t think you can beat Mama Cass.

Woot; first!

I love that lady!

One who came to my mind was Regina Spektor. Dunno if she’s quite what the OP is after. Her singing in The Calculation demonstrates her range pretty well.

Christina Aguilera can belt with the best of them. So can Amy Lee.

Oh my God yes, and that aria really lets her tear up the scenery.

I’ve only gotten to see her once, but it was magnificent – she did La Traviata at the Met. You’d think that Violetta wouldn’t be her role, but she owned it.

And Placido Domingo at that point had quite sensibly, as he aged, stepped back from the big tenor roles, and he was devastating in the pivotal role of the senior Germont.

This was back in 2013, I think. An unforgettable night.

Hitting the big “He loves GOLD!” finish:

“Guitarist Vic Flick who played on the track, recalled at a 2012 Academy of Motion Pictures salute to the music of James Bond that Bassey was having difficulty getting a proper take. [George, of the Beatles] Martin spoke to her and then over the recording baffle her brassiere came flying. She nailed it on the next take.”

I’m genuinely surprised that nobody has mentioned Julie Andrews yet. She sang before King George VI at the age of 13, and continued a strong career for decades.

Great song! It’s a video that makes you want to go out and find someone who hasn’t heard of Jinjer and get them to listen to it while you watch them. But a better example of her mixing belting with the growl is their latest release.

And I thought someone would have mentioned Pink (or P!nk) by now…

Pat Suzuki - “Grant Avenue San Francisco”

I popped in to add this one, but @racer72 beat me to it.

This one still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end, with how amazing the whole performance is. Brings a tear to my eye knowing that’s Bonzo’s son on drums, IIRC.

Tripler
“And I’m cryyying at Stairway to Heaven.”

I’m not normally a big Heart fan, but oh my god!

The OP does say “[anyone] but pop stars.”

I have enjoyed all the posts. My preference for non Pop Singers was only based on the fact that i was already aware of most of them. I was already aware of Etta James and Aretha Franklin also. But i enjoyed all the songs people have linked to.

And in quoting myself, i see a typo. That’s embarrassing.

here is one of my favorites.

Sarah Dugas is another one that comes to mind. You can hear her in the song Toujours Vouloir by The Duhks. She’s starts heating up around 1:40. It’s not an English-language song.

Nell Carter on Gimme A Break of all places.
